public transport on 1st of January in London? Does anyone know if there is any public transport (bus or tube or something else) that works on the 1st of January from Victoria Station (London)? And does the underground service work on that day in London? Thanks to anyone that will give me a definitive answer, have a good sunday night. Betty
Public transport in London during New Year Eve? Hi I'll be arriving in London on New Year Eve for countdown and wondering how easy it is to access public transport once the fireworks, etc have ended? Are the tubes/night buses absolutely packed and if so, would you recommend staying within walking distance of the London Eye?
Should the government sort out public transport (buses/trains) before taxing us on cars and flights? This is in response to the new tory proposals that want to impose heavy taxes on larger cars, more car park fees, taxes on internal flights, etc. Yet they are leaving us with no alternative but to use these!! If I want to go to Newcastle, London or Scotland (which I do relatively frequently) then the train ticket prices are astronomical, sometimes as much as a flight, and I often have to stand in a crowded and packed carraige. (It's actually not much better than the train network in India, where I've just spent the last couple of months, and believe me for a so called 'rich' country as ours that is a dire insult.) Also getting around anywhere by train or bus is often difficult and really expensive, the bus networks outside of major cities are a joke. So what are we expected to do here? I'm all for saving the envioronment, but squeezing more money out of us is not the way to do it. Should we all just stay home and not go anywhere? That seems to be what they want. Robert, thanks for your answer. Yes you caqn vote for other parties, but once one party puts a tax in, the others will all jump on the same bandwagon. There is no real difference between them. And yes repairing/improving the rail/bus/road infrastructure would cost a lot of money, but there should be no need to raise taxes to pay for it. We are already one of the highest taxed countries in the world, what do they do with all that money? Wate it, that's what. Instead of giving all our money out to Europe and foreign countries, they could use that on the infrastructure here, what about the money they waste on benefits? That could buy some new trains. You get my point.
Public transport in London? Is public transport in london expensive...? Can I get a ticket which includes all transport sectors (bus, metro, underground, overground etc...) - how much monthly...? Generally how much are the tickets monthly...?
Public Transport..London to Cardiff? Hi Does anybody know of any other transport services that go from London to Cardiff really early in the mornings or late at night? Reason being, I am about to buy tickets for Lady Gaga in Brixton but cant find any transport home! The last bus leaves at 21.30 and im staying late anyway to hopefully get a picture with Gaga after the show, so would need transport either on the dat at around 00.00 or better still 1-2am the next day! ive searched trains and buses but cant seem to find anything, any of you guys know anyway i might be able to do this? Also, staying the night is not an option im afraid as the tickets are costing me a fortune on ebay and ive got bills to pay!! Thanks!
london transport price hikes: are they justified? if so, then in what way are they justified? and if not why not? i already have a oyster card and despite these increases, the thing is i don't make that many journeys anyway and plus £1 per travel is a small price to pay, considering it will cost £2- that's right £2 quid- without an oyster card for a single journey on the bus for example. likewise a single journey in zone 1 on the tube will rise up to £4. and not forgetting also that free travel for under 16s, especially on london's buses still stands and alas, they are exempt from paying for their travel. i understand that the staff are underpaid as it is, and the system is supposed to improve but cannot london transport give them what they want, just so to prevent them from striking and to stop increasing the fares every year? do you use public transport, either in london or elsewhere and if elsewhere, how does it compare? what do you make of these increases, as proposed by ken livingstone and tfl?
Public Transport in London? I'm going to go to London for the weekend. Is there a travel card that I can get so that I can travel on the tube and buses all weekend? If so, how much does it cost? Thanks! Thanks for the info!
What do you think of London buses? I personnally dont drive a car......But use public transport to get to and from work everyday, which at times can take near 2 hours for an half hour journey!!! and thats the quickest route....... Mr Ken has this big idea that he wants to cut down on the fuel in london by putting money up on taxes, congestion charge etc, yet he will bump up the prices on travel to £2.00 per trip!!!! Dont you think this is just too much? Is Ken just a waste of time being Mayor.....? I even had my own mother injure herself on a bus last week because the bus driver was so dangerous hit on her brakes hard and my mum got flung forward causing damage..... do you think bud drivers should be investigated like all other drivers INCLUDING SPEEDING!!!!!! dont deny it bus drivers they all do it....... They even have the cheek to go on stike to ask for more money..... Maybe they should pay passengers to travel on their buses!!! Just think your putting your life in their hands!!!
How can people who live in London (England) afford to go to work? I'm planning a trip to visit my aunt and uncle in Cambridge. We were talking about a day trip to London and the prices of travel were shocking. The train fare was bad enough, but I learned that the fare on the tube is four pounds. That's a shocking amount (even when the exchange rate was much much better it would still be over $5). I can buy a monthly transit pass in Atlanta for $60 (about 30 pounds). I think if you don't have a pass the fare is $2. I realize London has a much larger transit system, but are salaries in London that high? How do the people who live there afford it? Doesn't the government subsidize public transportation? I know they have some system to limit the number of drivers in the city, but the best way to keep people from driving their cars in London is to make public transport (trains and tubes and buses) a much cheaper alternative. But my question is, how do Londoners afford transportation?
What is your favourite journey by public transport in London? And why? A bus or tube trip with interesting things to see? A rail journey which you enjoy or means something to you? A river cruise? Helena: Bus journeys early on Saturdays are good - less people, not stopping all the time. Haz: lol - I agree about Euston - its not very nice! One of the crimes of the 20th century was the demolition the old station , check out the old station hall : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Euston_Station_-_The_Great_Hall.jpg London can get me down sometimes, but some things are good! Edwardian architecture - not much better than the three graces? Sloth: I agree - did a randon trip to Chesham on the tube once - miles out of town! I used to live a good way out on the central towards Epping - tubes running through farm land! (Green belt policy) Carina - I remember (when I was a young lad in London for the holidays) the early days of the DLR. When Canary Wharf was like a Ghost town and Island Gardens was the terminus! Remember when Tobacco Dock was full of luxury shops which no-one went to?
Is there any public transport available to get from London to St. Albans on Saturday night? I temporary moved to St Albans beacuse of my job and I'm planning to go out on Saturday night in London. I obviously want to have a couple of drinks and therefore the idea to drive is not acceptable. I cheked bus&train timetables and I could not find any services running after 2.00am. So, I'm wondering whether there is any way to get to St. Albans using a public transport apart from Taxi!? Many thanks Alex I should have writen Sunday night I suppose. Coz I'm planning getting home on Sunday morning and there are no trains between 1.32am and 5.00am. Thanks to everyone who asked my question!
London transport? Hi there..I have arranged a birthday surprise for someone, and we will be traveling to london. His sister lives there and I would like to take him to see her. This will involve taking public transport from central london to windsor, has anyone any idea of the best bus/train route to take as i havent got a clue!!!! Many thanks Susan
Public transport - from kt66aw to kt92bz, London? Hi I need to travel from kt66aw to kt92bz. I need to travel by bus. If there is anyone living in the area who travels around by bus, i'd appreciate your help. Does the bus number 71 go anywhere near that place... thanks
Survey- Have you ever used Public Transport? In in London andddd.. Never paid to go on a Double Decker, Underground, Normal train, Public Bus, Taxi.. Been on Coaches but only during School trips. So i'm a walker and a car person lol And you?
Does America have public transport? I'm from London. My friend came back from New York not so long ago. She said she loved it but one problem that bothered her is that they didn't have public transport. Like here we have the tube, trains, buses to get from one place to another. Does America have that? I'm just interested. :) Thanks!
Can Cats get on the public transport, serious question? I need to take my cat to the vet but i don't have a cage thing for it. And my mum says i should just carry it on the bus. Is this even legal? Because i'm planning on buying one at the vets, if they sell one. Oh i live in London by the way.
Asking bus driver to tell you where the stop is? I am going to London with some friends and we are reliant on public transport. The buses we are catching will be at night and for places we don't know. Is it acceptable to ask the bus driver to let us know when we get to the stop (if we stand or sit at the front) or will s/he be too busy?
London Transport are taking me to court... I need help!? I think this country just wants to make money out of it's people you know. Let me tell you I have never in my life gone without a ticket on public transport. I have lost tickets but I'm never bothered. Now I'm bothered. I lost my ticket on board a bus some how and got inspected and then received a letter asking me to come to court. You would have thought there'd be a fine on the spot but instead I was asked to find my ticket where ever it was in my bags or what (by the inspector) and have it ready till I received a letter to my home address (that was to send the ticket with the letter to show I paid my fare). I didn't find the ticket and I assume now some one on the bus took/found my ticket and used it for themselves, when they were asked to show their ticket. I had made it clear in the comments bit for the first letter that i touched my oyster card which i found had no money, asked the bus driver how much the fare was, paid him, nearly forgot to take my ticket which I got reminded to take, took my ticket, sat down with my bags, saw the inspector board, started looking for ticket and then it was nowhere to be found. I even missed my stop when the inspector took my details down and he even asked me for my ID which I showed him to clarify who i was. I also mentioned in this letter that still today I have not found my ticket. Anyway now they have sent me another letter asking for me to either plea guilty (for not having a ticket) by post or to plea guilty or not guilty at court. I really don't want to plea guilty for not having a ticket because I know that I paid. I just wonder why didn't the inspector ask the bus driver about me??? It was just minutes after that bought a ticket and sat down and why don't they bother to check the damn bus cameras??? There's like so many of them as well. All the evidence is there that I paid. I just feel so upset and top of that I'm a student nurse and this is a conviction or some sort, so it's going on my criminal record if I'm right?? What should I do??? Shall I just pay the fine and plea guilty then????
Is being a tourist in New York like being a tourist in London? I live in London and I'm going on a splurge in New York soon but don't know how long I need. How long would I need to get to places and travel around the tourist sites. I intend to go shopping and take a quick trip around Macy's and Time Square. Is there an Open Top tour bus in New York? Would I need as much time to get to everywhere in New York as to get to everywhere in London - I hear the public transport is worse in New York.
To all Londoners - Is anyone else fed up with paying for the cr*p service Transport for London offer? I use public transport every day and it is awful and rapidly getting worse. Trains, tubes, buses and the DLR! I can't believe we're actually going to be showing these services off in 2012! The transport system is going to collapse with all the people visiting for the Olympics. and it's too bloody expensive!! Any views? I wish the God Squad would refrain from commenting all the time just to get 2 points. And to Dublin and Glasgow, you're not hosting the Olympics in 2012, so I don't think you quite see the point. People in London are pi**ed off enough without you lot telling us how 'lucky' we are. If I could earn enough money to live in my home in Kent near my friends and family without travelling into London, believe me I would. And so would all the other people that live in Kent, Essex etc.
london bus drivers on strike over pay: fair or unfair for the passengers? i want to ask whether you think the majority of london bus drivers are allowed to go on strike because of pay, considering that certain bus services are not running because of this? today, i with many other people were standing out in the cold, waited ages for our bus routes to turn up, only to look at the small poster which said something like t'he following bus routes will not be running from 20- 26 november'. hence, i had to take an alternative bus route and eventually walk home. the bus routes that weren't running were 98 and 113 to name but a couple. i was pissed off that i was standing at the bus stop for two hours- only to realise they were not running. were you one of the many people having to endure a long wait for a bus to turn up? what do you make of the actions of the bus drivers who refused to drive the buses and instead chose to strike? do you believe that when they go on strike they put themselves first over the passengers needs? what is your view on public transport? i wholeheartedly agree that their pay should be increased. but why should they allow their dilemma affect other passengers in the process? yes, they should be allowed to protest- but only at times when they are not on duty, not when they're supposed to be driving the buses and getting people to their destinations
Do you know some website which calculate...? ...the best way to move in London city by public transport? In Italy there is, for Rome, this page http://infopoint.atac.roma.it/ of ATAC website: you choose your starting point and your ending point and it calculate the best streets and the best public transport (bus and underground) to realize it. Does something similar exist for London?
How to pay for travel on public transport in Paris? I am going to Paris alone, its my first time travelling without my parents and I don't speak very much French so I am tryin to plan my trip ahead. I will arrive at the coach station at 4.30pm on a Sunday and I need to my hotel on public transport. I have planned my journey on RATP ... I will travel from zones 1-4, I'll take a metro, a RER(not sure what this is?), and a bus I would like to know what type of ticket to buy, preferably the cheapest one? And where can I buy it? In London we can't buy tickets on buses you have to find somewhere to buy tehm beforehand so I don't know if its the same in Paris ... also on a Sunday in london, most shops/ticket offices are closed. Also on my way home I need to get from zone 4 -> 1 and then I would like some kind of travelcard to use on the metro/buses in the centre of Paris Thanks!! Oh and also... is there a way to check in advance if the trains/busses are running. In London there is ALWAYS engineering works on the line so everything closes randomly and I wouldn't like to get caught out by this in a strange city
How is the public transport like in LA? Is it good and safe? I am going to go to college there and I will be living in Studio City or West Hollywood something like that. How long would it take me approximately to like Santa Monica or downtown LA? Just so I get the idea, if it's easy to move around LA using public transport because I don't want to get a car just yet, I am 18 and it's useless for me, I always use public transport. Also, can you get like a monthly pass so you can use both buses/metros ?? And how much does it cost? Like for example here in London it's an oyster card and you pay 116 pounds, which is like 182 dollars per month. And what areas should I avoid? Thanks!
Please give me some advices for travelling to London? Hi, I am living in the Netherlands. I am planning to visit London for a weekend of 26 and 27 of March. I have several questions: 1. At London airport, which is the most convenient public transport for me to go to the city central? 2. Here, in the Netherlands, people use bus as the most popular public transport, in London, is it tram/metro or also bus? 3. Where must I visit in London? Thanks in advance! Hi, I will stay there for 2 days. could you please recommend me some best places to go? I am really thankful about your suggestions but it is quite long for me though :) Thanks!
If somebody started to physicaly intimidate you on London Transport - what are the odds of...? ...some members of the public, fellow commuters getting off their seats and intervening/stopping the loser trying to hit/bully you ? I think theres a 3/10 chance that somebody might get up and help you - and its sad that I think thats the best odds too. Apparently the #1 excuse for not intervening in matters like those is 'they were simply too shocked' heh. I mean if some nutcase got up and started smacking a rolled up newspaper on your head really hard, and then began palming your head across aggressively you're not going to just sit there hoping somebody will get up and help you right ? The good news is the majority of commuters on London Transport are amongst the best in the world, but all it would take is one experience of being victim to a nutjobs antics on a train or bus heh.
Public transport- Potters Bar? I live in Potters Bar and have to travel to South Mimms everyday during peak hours. I can either take 84 or 398 buses, and I want to buy a seasonal ticket but I can't find any info about seasonal tickets for this route, how much is it, how to get it. Any ideas? Also, I occasionally travel to Central London and usually pay about 10quid for a open day return, would it be any cheaper with an oyster card if Potters Bar is not within a zone?
Why dont they accept Oystercards on overground trains? Its a pain in the @ss. if i want to go out for the day and choose to use bus and overground train, i have to charge my Oyster AND buy a travelcard or train ticket. Isnt this extortion? Why cant Livingstone allow Oysters on trains too, if he GENUINELY wants to improve public transport in London?
So why do I have a fascination with strap-hanging on public transport? The above is DESPITE the fact that I do not live in a megalopolis such as London, New York or Tokyo. Or maybe it is BECAUSE I don't. My home city is Bristol, England, U.K., which has a population of approximately 425,000 within the city limits, and 550,000 within the urban area. So basically a medium-sized city. The only means of getting around this city is via it's bus network, there are no light rail or underground networks in my home city. Also, the bus services in the city are generally underused, partly due to a poor service, and partly due to the cost of travel. So therefore the chances a getting a seat on the buses here is pretty high, (guaranteed during the off-peak, and a 98% chance during the rush hour), because the majority travel by car. Many people who I know don't understand the above fascination (or obsession), whatever you want to call it. So can anyone answer the above question for me?
I have a job in Central London near Temple, where would be the best place to live considering the following? Looking for a flat or house (whichever is cheaper) with 1/2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom (very basic is fine as long as it's hygienic... even a studio). Commute by Public Transport only preferably without the use of buses in Central London (i.e. Tube), lively during the day and safe during nights. It can be far but it then needs very good public transport from place. Area needs some small local shops as well (like groceries or Iceland or something along that line) Don't mind interchanges but time is an issue - short and frequent as possible. Rent bracket £1000 per month, £1500 if it's two bedroom + as a friend could come and stay.
why are trains and buses such disgusting peasant carriers everytime i get on a bus it stinks, windows are filthy, and the seats sometimes urine stained, let alone all the immigrant faces staring back at me, same on the tube, driven into some rat infested plug holes, and yet again morrreee immigrant faces, is this modern london, why can't people clean the buses and tubes, and make my entry into the platform more enjoyable, how revolting to think people actually go on public transport, peasant carriers i call them, get a car and drive, thats what i do now, much more interesting, then you don't have to sit near any stinking tramps and immigrants, makes me sick yyuukkk
Assaults on public transport...? Tonight in south London i was punched in the head at a bus stop randomly and unprevoked by some teenager that was high on drugs. Police response was you may get called by a local station sometime! Anyone had anything similar? Is all on CCTV what else can I do?
So is THIS how the terrorists did it? Posing & infiltrating high profile service groups? April 19, 1995 Timothy McVeigh was accused of single-handedly bombing the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. That day, ATF agents (who had offices in the building, 9th floor) were not in the office that day. BUT, some of them just happened to be close by, and were on the scene shortly after the blast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwiybODFyYo July 7, 2005 London bombings (also called the 7/7 bombings) were a series of coordinated bomb blasts that hit London's public transport system. At the same time this happened, Visor Consultants were running a mock terrorist drill in the London Underground. There was one bus, out of all the rest of the buses in operation that morning, that was told to reroute and stop at an intersection, which just happened to also have a bomb on it. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5948263607579389947 September 11, 2001 On the morning of the attack on the Twin Towers in NYC, NORAD was conducting wartime drills at headquarters level, which confused them and caused them not to respond to any of the four planes involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik4qTPfLgco So doesn't it seem like there's internal MOLES at work here? They should be looking into the employees of these organizations as being potential terrorists, shouldn't they?
Help needed to plan day trip from London to Stonehenge and Avebury!? Hi, I'm planning to take the train from London to Stonehenge and hopefully Avebury with my friend instead of booking a place with day-tour agencies. While I roughly know how to get to Salisbury from London, I am not sure of the time needed or bus number to take us from Salisbury to Avebury. Can anyone advise us on the following: 1) Cost of train ticket frm London to Salisbury; 2) Cost of bus ride from Salisbury to Stonehenge; 3) What public transport available from Stonehenge to Avebury, ticket costs as well as length of time needed to reach there; 4) How to get back from Avebury to London, as well as costs and time duration. Thanks plenty in advance :)

How much money would i need to backpack through japan for two months? Hi there, Its been a childhood dream of mine to travel Japan from top to bottom for as long as i can remember. Now im finally in the position where i can make it happen but im a bit clueless as to how much it would cost. Basically i want to spend about 2 months travelling slowly from one end of Japan to the other, just making my way via public transport buses, trains, planes etc. I'm not particularly fussy when it comes to accommodation, but im not sure if i could spend 2 months in a "pod" bed! Im currently working in London and have worked out by the end of April 2011 (which in a perfect world, is when i'd like to go) ...with my current job, i can save roughly £2000. If anyone has done this before and has some helpful tips about travelling japan, visas, or just an idea of how much things would cost, I'd greatly appreciate it. At the moment everything is still very vague but i'm starting to plan now so hopefully (if not April) ill be able to go sometime this year or early next! A bit of extra information: I'm planning on taking Japanese language lessons from now until i go, so hopefully at the very least ill be able to get around, say my please and thank you's and have a casual conversation! Thanks! Hey thanks for all your answers, they're really helpful. I cant believe i didnt think to just go and buy a lonely planet or something like that! One more thing im not actually from the UK. Im Australian living and working here so will this make a difference? Thanks guys!
public transport route? I need to go to enstone in oxfordshire to this racing track http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=enstone&sll=51.926008,-1.434917&sspn=0.029535,0.087118&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Enstone,+Chipping+Norton,+Oxfordshire,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.931221,-1.425133&spn=0.014766,0.043559&t=h&z=15 now i know to get from london you need to take a train from Paddington to charlbury, however i don't know how to get from charlbury to the race track (preferably by bus), any help in telling me how to get there would be greatly appreciated.
Travel & Hotels around Thorpe Park & London? Hi all, Going to Thorpe Park on May 15th, we are travelling down by coach in the morning (the return is included later that evening) anyway we were thinking about going to london afterwards and staying the night, shopping the next day. Firstly pretty sure there has to be but not sure, is there a train or bus into london from thorpe park if so any websites for this? Also where would you recommend staying, dosnt have to be in london city but easy to get to with public transport and has at least a bar or restaurant near by! :-)
What is your opinion about Willesden Green? I am planning to move to Willesden Green in London. I would like to know some information about the region: - Is it a safe area? - How much is the rent for a 3-bed flat? - Is the public transport convenient (bus, tube, etc)? - Are there any nice shops, bars, coffee shops etc? - If I buy a house there, is it a high value neighbourhood? - How would you describe this area?
Are most cars in Japan manual or automatic? That's question one. Question Two is: Are there certain suburban areas/small cities in Japan where you absolutely MUST have a car? I won't live in the countryside, so that's out of the question. If I live in a big city like Tokyo or Osaka, I won't drive at all. But will living in a smaller city, like Kumamoto, Aomori or Morioka require a car? Or will I be able to get around perfectly fine by buses and trains in those places? (About myself: I can't drive and I come from a place where public transport is popular. I'm thinking about learning to drive, and I'm in the UK right now, where manual cars predominate and public transport outside London is barely adequate at best.) THANKS!! =)
Going from London Gatwick to Dover and back again? I have a Swedish friend coming to visit me for a couple of days during the Christmas holidays. The only direct flights from Stockholm Skavsta are to London Gatwick, which is about 80 miles away from Dover (where I live). I would ask my parents to pick him up from Gatwick (they have offered) but unfortunately they are in Kenya during the time of his visit. Can anyone suggest the best way for my friend to leave get to Dover, then (after a couple of days) return to London Gatwick again? He would have to travel alone as I can't afford 2 journeys, I will probably have to pay for the journey seeing as he is paying for the flights, so preferably something cheap. I found the following infomation on the internet: Dover - Gatwick Airport Public Transport (Adult price per person) Transport; National Express Bustakes 5 hours, return price is £36.30 (note: as this is quite cheap and the journey is too long to spend alone, I would be happy to pay for me to go to the airport, pick him up and travel back to Dover on the Nat. Ex. Bus. I would, however, have to send him back to the airport alone.) Rail (Off Peak Fare) takes 2 to 3 hours, return price is £46.60 Rail (Anytime Fare) takes 2 to 3 hours, return price is £79.20 I also found out that it will cost £90 for a taxi from Gatwick to Dover (meaning that it would be, altogether, £180 to send him back to the airport again and he would have to go alone or that £180 would double for me to go there and back twice), so taxi is not really an option unless his parents are paying and he can just taxi straight to my front door from the airport. What are the rail routes, or can you take a coach? How much would it be for either, and are there discount sites? Please give me as much information as possible, any help will be greatly appreciated! In other words, I need to get my friend from Gatwick airport to Dover (not the port) as cheaply and as easily as possible. He has never been to England before and I rarely use trains, so I need clear instructions on train routes etc if that is the best way. Thanks SO much.

There was one bus, out of all the rest of the buses in operation that morning, that was told to reroute and stop at an intersection, which just happened to also have a bomb on it. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5948263607579389947 September 11, 2001 On the morning of the attack on the Twin Towers in NYC, NORAD was conducting wartime drills at headquarters level, which confused them and caused them not to respond to any of the four planes involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik4qTPfLgco Oh yeah, and getting in real good with the Bushes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXk0LFVAgHE So doesn't it seem like there's internal MOLES at work here? They should be looking into the employees of these organizations as being potential terrorists, shouldn't they? whcwarrior_10, you mean like his terrorist cousins Bush & Cheney? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjwgkCZFP5U YouTube is the host, not the SOURCE.
UK: Who else thinks bus fares are a rip off? I live in Bristol, ENG. The bus fares here are a complete and utter rip off - it is cheaper to buy a day ticket, than to buy a single or return ticket!! What I don't get, is the government and people say things need to be done about Global warming, but for starters, they don't care about Public Transport! - If they made bus fares a lot cheaper, more people would use them! I thought in London, the bus/tube fares were really cheap. I don't see why it can't be like that all around the country. On Buses in the South West, you can get a ticket for £6.90 or something which is called a "FirstDay South West" which lets you travel from places like Bristol to Lands End. But, I doubt you could do that in a day just on "First" buses. Also, who else thinks they are really unreliable? cheers
Department of Transport? Where is it in London? I have been told its near Victoria Tube Station but when I look at the map its about a bus stop away from that station. So I'm confused. I might be starting temp work there soon so I need to know. Can anyone help? If you know where it is, is it a small department or a big one with many offices? I just want to know if its a private department or a public one. I would ask but the temp agency is closed at the moment.
Why do politicians assume everywhere is like London? What is it with politicians and the various academics that are telling us car users we need to get out of the car and onto public transport. I've been to London numerous times, and yes the public transport system there works very well, providing you stay within the confines of central London. Up here in the North we don't have the luxury of tubes or an efficient bus service. A vast majority of people work on industrial estates in the middle of nowhere. How the hell do they expect us to get to work using public transport? It takes me half an hour to travel the 30miles to work. On public transport I am looking at two hours. I know this argument has been stated before, but everytime I see the car debate on TV or in the papers, this issue is never raised, its always a politician harping on about how they use the tube so why can't everyone else use public transport aaargh makes my blood boil !!
News years eve questions answered? To try and prevent repetitive questions, here's a list of things you may want to know if travelling to London tonight. Public transport: Tube running normal, and free between 11.45 - 04.30 British rail: Mainly to schedule, but check time tables. Buses: Night buses and the 24 hour services running normal, BUT..there will be a reduced service leaving central london between the hours of 1900 - 03.00, this is due to all the road closures. Mini cabs: Always charge double fare, and whatever else they can get away with....be careful. London taxis (black cabs) from 22.00 hrs, there is an additional £4.00 added to the normal fare, (they are not double, nor have they ever been). But remember, the taxi trade will not be allowed into central london until the police remove the blockades, if you are able, walk out beyond the road closures to obtain one. Bogus mini cabs operate at this time of year, so be vigilant and stay safe. Fireworks: the main show will be next to the London Eye, Belvedere road SE1, opposite waterloo station, vantage points will be limited if you arrive LATE (This place get's rammo) so beware of pick pockets. Alternative vantage points: Temple place, next to the howard hotel, on the north side of the river, it is elevated above ground level, and you can even stand on the giant wall which surrounds the gardens. Waterloo bridge, Westminster bridge (the busiest), and the pedestrian millenium bridge. Have a great time, wrap up warm, and a happy new year to you all. PS: If you have any questions, pleasde post it, and i'll respond. PS: If you have any questions, please post it, and i'll respond. Lucy and the answer, yeah, that's why i posted it in the London category........Doh !!
Transport in Italy - especially Venice?!? I'm quite confused about the transportation in certain places. I understand Milan has got a metro system - like London's. So am I right in saying it shouldn't be a massive problem getting from one place to another? Now what's the situation like for Verona, Venice and Bologna. Venice - I'm guessing if you live around the main island it should be easy to go to places within venice by public transport (boat) But what if you live around Marghera, Porto Marghera or San Giuliano? I'm naming these places from google map. Is it relatively easy to go from these places to mainland island? and how would you do that and how much would it cost? Verona and Bologna - I think it's buses right? are they fairly well connected to different places within the city?
could this be true? Global Warming? New Data Shows Ice Is Back Tuesday, February 19, 2008 11:55 AM By: Phil Brennan Article Font Size Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory? Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels. Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual, challenging the global warming crusaders and buttressing arguments of skeptics who deny that the world is undergoing global warming. The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his "Inconvenient Truth" lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate. Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years. As winter roars in across the Northern Hemisphere, Mother Nature seems to have joined the ranks of the skeptics. As the Express notes, scientists are saying the northern Hemisphere has endured its coldest winter in decades, adding that snow cover across the area is at its greatest since 1966. The newspaper cites the one exception — Western Europe, which had, until the weekend when temperatures plunged to as low as -10 C in some places, been basking in unseasonably warm weather. Around the world, vast areas have been buried under some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. Central and southern China, the United States, and Canada were hit hard by snowstorms. In China, snowfall was so heavy that over 100,000 houses collapsed under the weight of snow. Jerusalem, Damascus, Amman, and northern Saudi Arabia report the heaviest falls in years and below-zero temperatures. In Afghanistan, snow and freezing weather killed 120 people. Even Baghdad had a snowstorm, the first in the memory of most residents. AFP news reports icy temperatures have just swept through south China, stranding 180,000 people and leading to widespread power cuts just as the area was recovering from the worst weather in 50 years, the government said Monday. The latest cold snap has taken a severe toll in usually temperate Yunnan province, which has been struck by heavy snowfalls since Thursday, a government official from the provincial disaster relief office told AFP. Twelve people have died there, state Xinhua news agency reported, and four remained missing as of Saturday. An ongoing record-long spell of cold weather in Vietnam's northern region, which started on Jan. 14, has killed nearly 60,000 cattle, mainly bull and buffalo calves, local press reported Monday. By Feb. 17, the spell had killed a total of 59,962 cattle in the region, including 7,349 in the Ha Giang province, 6,400 in Lao Cai, and 5,571 in Bac Can province, said Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Animal Husbandry Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the Pioneer newspaper. In Britain the temperatures plunged to -10 C in central England, according to the Express, which reports that experts say that February could end up as one of the coldest in Britain in the past 10 years with the freezing night-time conditions expected to stay around a frigid -8 C until at least the middle of the week. And the BBC reports that a bus company's efforts to cut global warming emissions have led to services being disrupted by cold weather. Meanwhile Athens News reports that a raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend and continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. The agency reported that public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed. Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in. More than 100 villages were snowed-in on the island of Crete and temperatures in Athens dropped to -6 C before dawn, while the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina, where they plunged to -12 C. If global warming gets any worse we'll all freeze to death. © 2008 Newsmax. All rights reserved. Sophia B the source is at the end of the article
Could these instances just be coincidences, or is there a MOLE problem? April 19, 1995 Timothy McVeigh was accused of single-handedly bombing the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. That day, ATF agents (who had offices in the building, 9th floor) were not in the office that day. BUT, some of them just happened to be close by, and were on the scene shortly after the blast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwiybODFyYo July 7, 2005 London bombings (also called the 7/7 bombings) were a series of coordinated bomb blasts that hit London's public transport system. What were the most important political/sensational happenings from 2000-2008 in the UK.? I have to give a presentation about this topic in the 13th grade. I`ve collect several information, but maybe there were some important events which I didn't realized here in a foreign country.Mainly I'm looking for important political occasions. Here are my collected events. Btw: Thanks for your help. Politics 2001 7 June - General Election: Labour Party attains a second successive General Election victory. 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks: 67 UK nationals perish in the attacks, which was the second largest loss of life of any nation only behind the United States itself. 2003 20 March - 2003 Iraq war: Land troops from United Kingdom join troops from the United States, Australia and Poland in the invasion of Iraq. 2004 19 April - Tony Blair announces a change in government policy: there is to be a referendum on the proposed EU Constitution. 2004 26 December - A significant number of Britons are among the thousands of people killed by a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The victims are killed in countries including Indonesia and Thailand. [2] 2005 21 July - 21 July 2005 London bombings: four attempted bomb attacks disrupt part of London's public transport. Small explosions occur around midday at Shepherd's Bush, Warren Street and Oval stations on London Underground, and on a bus in Bethnal Green. 2006 23 November - Alexander Litvinenko dies in London having been poisoned by Polonium-210.
London from Bedford/Milton Keynes? We are planning to spend a day out in London from Bedford or Milton Keynes. I have been looking at public transport fares and I found for 2 adults and 2 children it would be 55 GBP for the train and 36 GBP for the bus. Wouldn't be cheaper to go by car and even pay for a car park? Is there anywhere to park for free or at cheap rates in/near London?
what types of people are stupid and moronic enough to vandalise bus shelters? i ask this question because every time i am on my way to and from university i see glass, graffiti everywhere. not to mention it being constantly vandalised. don't they realise it takes london transport, thousands of pounds to build a new one? then again, by the time they build a new one, it isn't long before it is vandalised again and again. why cannot london transport install tiny cameras for eg, just so to catch and prosecute the thugs who do this? if the purpose of having bus shelters is so that mindless yobs can abuse them, then that is just so terrible and sad. idiots who do this type of thing have no respect for private property and have no regard for other people who stand under or wait at the bus shelter. i feel angry and appalled that certain people, especially a few out of control teens, feel the need to sabatage and destroy public property. what motivates them to do these types of things, is something i and many other people would like to know. what are your views? oops, i apologise. it should read: 'costs not takes london transport... etc'. my mistake. sorry about that!

Even though Korea recognized acupuncture and Joe's grand father is the top acupuncture physician there, he can't help. Others specialist can not do much for remedy. Being a father of an autistic kid, his father has a lot of pressure and looking for answer desperately. There finally came to see our MASTER LEONG through high recommendation from a friend. When he first came into our centre everyone in the premise had a shock from his 'super-hyper active behavior'.Jumping and screaming all over the place and zero communication and eyes contact. He is in his own world, very scared and frustrated, until he hits himself on the head continuous for about 10 mins to 30 mins. Master Leong applied Qi Qong and acupuncture treatment to calmed him down. According to Master Leong it is his brain's Qi is not moving smoothly . He calm down after 30 minutes ,then had another session of Qi Qong and acupuncture after one hour. 3 days of treatment went by and they can see that Joe can respond to instruction from his father and has some eyes contact. They went back to Korea because his father has only 3 days of lift from work, but he book for the second visit that is after six months. He took 6 months of herbal medication ( 168 TOLE'S SPECIAL BRAIN'S POWDER )home and a list of do's and done's . After 6 months they came for 30 days of treatment. We saw a lot of different from 6 months back when they first visit us. The father is so happy and told us he have finally found the right place for his son Joe. He said all his relative in Korea said he has improved a lot since he took our treatment and special brain's powder. For the 30 days here everyday he has 2 session of treatment, that is 60 treatments in total. We can see him improving everyday and in the end of the treatment he was about 80% !!! recovered. They have to go home now and promise to come in 12 months time. This time he took 12 months of medication (Tole's Brain's powder) with him. The 3rd visit comes, he was almost 100% recovered!!! when we see him. Still we give him the same treatment for 30 days. In the end of this trip he is quit confident and normal in most of his activities. They went home with a HAPPY HEART !!! NO MORE MEDICINE, WORRY, STRESS, FRUSTRATION, SLEEPLESS NIGHT. AUTISM Isolated in worlds of their own, people with autism appear indifferent and remote and are unable to form emotional bonds with others. Although people with this baffling brain disorder can display a wide range of symptoms and disability, many are incapable of understanding other people's thoughts, feelings, and needs. Often, language and intelligence fail to develop fully, making communication and social relationships difficult. Many people with autism engage in repetitive activities, like rocking or banging their heads, or rigidly following familiar patterns in their everyday routines. Some are painfully sensitive to sound, touch, sight, or smell. Children with autism do not follow the typical patterns of child development. In some children, hints of future problems may be apparent from birth. In most cases, the problems become more noticeable as the child slips farther behind other children the same age. Other children start off well enough. But between 18 and 36 months old, they suddenly reject people, act strangely, and lose language and social skills they had already acquired. As a parent, teacher, or caregiver you may know the frustration of trying to communicate and connect with children or adults who have autism. You may feel ignored as they engage in endlessly repetitive behaviors. You may despair at the bizarre ways they express their inner needs. And you may feel sorrow that your hopes and dreams for them may never materialize. But there is help-and hope. Gone are the days when people with autism were isolated, typically sent away to institutions. Today, many youngsters can be helped to attend school with other children. Methods are available to help improve their social, language, and academic skills. Autism is found in every country and region of the world, and in families of all racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. Emerging in childhood, it affects about 3 or 4 people in every thousand and is three to four times more common in boys than girls. Girls with the disorder, however, tend to have more severe symptoms and lower intelligence. THE TOLE is dedicated to understanding the workings and inter-relationships of the various regions of the brain, and to developing preventive measures and new treatments for disorders like autism that handicap people in school, work, and social relationships and brain damage or vegetable. Up-to-date information on autism and treatment result for autistic is the role of THE TOLE in identifying underlying causes and effective treatments are available in our Autism Herbs Treatment Cure- The Tole Main Page.: Also described are symptoms and diagnostic procedures, treatment options, strategies for coping, and sources of information and support. What is ADHD? ADHD often prevents children from learning and socializing well. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) refer to a range of problem behaviors associated with poor attention span. These may include impulsiveness, restlessness and hyperactivity, as well as inattentiveness, and often prevent children from learning and socializing well. ADHD is sometimes referred to as hyper kinetic disorder. What are the symptoms of ADHD Attention difficulties A child must have exhibited at least six of the following symptoms for at least six months to an extent that is unusual for their age and level of intelligence. Fails to pay close attention to detail or makes careless errors during work or play. Fails to finish tasks or sustain attention in play activities. Seems not to listen to what is said to him or her. Fails to follow through instructions or to finish homework or chores (not because of confrontational behavior or failure to understand instructions). Disorganized about tasks and activities. Avoids tasks like homework that require sustained mental effort. Loses things necessary for certain tasks or activities, such as pencils, books or toys. Easily distracted. Forgetful in the course of daily activities. Hyperactivity A child must have exhibited at least three of the following symptoms for at least six months to an extent that is unusual for their age and level of intelligence. Runs around or excessively climbs over things Unduly noisy in playing, or has difficulty in engaging in quiet leisure activities. Leaves seat in classroom or in other situations where remaining seated is expected. Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms on seat. Impulsivity At least one of the following symptoms must have persisted at least for six months to an extent that is unusual for their age and level of intelligence. Blurts out answers before the questions have been completed. Fails to wait in lines or await turns in games or group situations. Interrupts or intrudes on others, e.g. jump into others conversations or games. Talks excessively without appropriate response to social restraint. Pervasiveness of attention difficulties and hyperactivity For a diagnosis or description of ADHD a child would be expected to show the above difficulties in more than one setting, e.g. at school and at home. Problems are not shown 'at home' but are very evident when a child goes to a hospital department. This can happen when parents do not realize that their child's behavior is out of the normal range (perhaps because they have no other children, or they have other children who behave similarly). It may also be because the problems are mild, or because the family has handled the attention lack at home in such a way that it is not evident there is a major problem, or because the child is very young. In those cases it is quite reasonable for parents not to consider that their child has an attention deficit problem. These conditions has a good chance to be treated, it will take time and effort to do it. The Tole's way of remedies for them is not easy and tedious, the good part is it works with many of them. Runs around or excessively climbs over things. (In adolescents or adults only feelings of restlessness may occur.) Unduly noisy in playing, or has difficulty in engaging in quiet leisure activities. Leaves seat in classroom or in other situations where remaining seated is expected. Fails to wait in lines or await turns in games or group situations. Interrupts or intrudes on others, likes to jump into others conversations or games. Talks excessively without appropriate response to social restraint. ADHD or Others causes Epileptic seizures can cause a child to become drowsy, impairing their attention. Epilepsy can also cause unusual behavior and lead to abnormal perceptions. Hearing problems such as deafness or glue ear can make it hard for a child to follow instructions and make them appear inattentive. Reading problems, making it hard to complete tasks or follow instructions. Obsessive compulsive disorder leads to people following strange rituals that preoccupy their thoughts and distract their attention. Tourette's syndrome involves repetitive, involuntary jerking movements of the body and sudden outbursts of noise or swearing. Autism and Asperger's syndrome often lead to difficulties in understanding and using language. Prolonged periods of insufficient sleep, causing poor concentration. Some children may be very active or be easily distracted or have difficulty concentrating. If these behaviours are relatively mild, they should not be considered a disorder. Others difficulties that occurs alongside Autism ADHD ADHD often occurs alongside other difficulties and is not the sole cause of problem behavior. Children may exhibit temper tantrums, sleep disorders, and be clumsy. Other behavioral problems that occur with ADHD include: confrontational defiant behavior, which occurs in most of these kids. The child loses their temper, argues and refuses to comply with adults and deliberately annoys others. conduct disorders occur in at least 25 per cent of children. The child may be destructive or show deceitful behavior such as lying, breaking rules and stealing. specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, occur in 25-30 per cent of children. severe clinical depression occurs in about 30 per cent of children. anxiety disorders occur in 30 per cent of children. What causes ADHD? Biological Temperamental, as this contributes to their attitude and personality. Twins suggest a genetic link to ADHD. In 80-90 per cent of identical twins where one has ADHD so does the other. Recent research also suggests there is a greater chance of inheriting the condition from male relatives such as grandfathers and uncles. Brain injuries due to birth trauma or pre-birth problems. The brain structures believed to be linked to the development of ADHD are vulnerable to hypoxic damage during birth. The damage is caused by inadequate oxygen (QI flow) reaching parts of the brain while blood flow is reduced. Environmental conditions: Family stress. Educational difficulties. ADHD diagnosis Observations to the assessment of a child with possible ADHD. There is no single diagnostic test for ADHD so different sorts of information needs to be gathered, such as the following: History of symptoms The precise nature of the difficulties, when they were first noticed, in what situations they occur, factors that exacerbate or relieve them. Medical history Risk factors that could predispose the child to ADHD include difficulties and risks in pregnancy and during birth, for example if the mother was in poor health, very young or drank alcohol or smoked or had an extended or complicated labor. Several medical conditions are known to be associated with ADHD. These include fragile-X syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, G6PD deficiency, phenylketonuria and generalized resistance to thyroid hormone. Accidents, operations and chronic medical conditions such as epilepsy, asthma and heart, liver and kidney disorders all need to be taken in to account. Also of possible relevance is any medication the child is taking, as well as any adverse reactions they have had to medication in the past. Past psychiatric history: Enquiring about any mental health problems the child has had can help rule out depression or anxiety being behind the symptoms. Educational history: This means the level of their ability and what specific difficulties they have, how they function within their peer group and get on with teachers, and any behavior difficulties such as suspensions or exclusions. Family history: The mental and physical health of the child's parents and other family members can be relevant, particularly regarding the incidence of ADHD or depression. Less then 1% ahs the family history but this is one of the research data base. Social assessment: The family's social circumstances, such as housing, poverty, and social support may all have an impact on the child's behavior. Less then 4 % has this problem but it should be taken into consideration. What treatment is available for ADHD? When is the London Mayor Election? I live up North, but I cannot understand why folk in London have not got rid of Red Ken yet? Will this be your first chance ????????????? I'd vote for Borris the Philandering Toff Johnson & give Red Ken the boot, plus I'd ban cars, altogether in London - never mind congestion charges - what's the point of that ? The rich can pay. Either every one should ride a bike, take the bus, catch the train or walk or everyone should be allowed to drive in London - why punish folk for being poor. Why not let the poor in if driving cars worth less than say £800, for free and charge the rich toffs with new cars £30,000 hybrids £800 per day. That would be far and sensible? Why have you let Red Ken allow the toffs to drive, when he forces the working classes onto public transport?
How do you get from Victoria Coach Station to Imperial College by bus? What bus number? What stop do I catch the bus from? How far is it from the coach station? What bus stop do I get off at? Is that close to the uni? Whereabouts are the bus stops for the return journey (i.e. where to catch it from and where to get off)? How much does it cost? Do I have to buy my tickets beforehand from a machine? Sorry for all the questions, I've never used public transport in London before. And please don't just tell me to take the tube because it's easier, I'd like directions specifically for buses please. Thankyou!

City cars? A lot of people seem to be very worried about drivers of 4X4's in cities, especially London. I don't understand why it is always the anti 4X4 wallies who are the most vociferous, as they are no worse than any other car, but I had to drive to London last week (in a hired Focus - awfully small and claustrophobic) and found no problem parking near Petticoat Lane. Mind you, the £10 a day was rather steep! Any way my point is why do city workers or dwellers drive into the city at all? Why not use public transport? Plenty of buses, trains etc. They should try living in the sticks. If you are lucky 1 bus a day, no trains or tube. City people are basically spoilt softies who just like to complain. Should city centres be completely traffic free?
Do u live in London? Hi i need a very quick suggestion please! I was wondering if you might know any good websites that will help direct me to a place i need to go via public transport! I use google directions but thats only for car users. I need one that will tell me which train/bus i need to get to go to .. etc Thanks for your concern.
Why does it still keep happening? "The playing of loud music on most forms of public transport is already regulated or prohibited by law. For buses and coaches, the relevant regulations states that 'Passengers shall not play or operate any musical instrument or sound reproducing equipment to the annoyance of any person on the vehicle or in a manner likely to cause annoyance to such a person. A person who breaches this regulation may be removed from the vehicle by the driver, inspector or conductor, or (at their request) by the police, and may be liable to a penalty not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale (£1,000). Similar regulations are in place covering the rail network and London Underground. The Government does not believe that any further regulations are required." Yet chavs can still regularly be seen lurking at bus stops/park benches or their most regular haunt - the back of the bus - blaring out music at a ridiculous volume (invariably what they call "Rap" and "R'n'B")... WHEN WILL IT STOP? Well I'm sorry, but I've only ever encountered chavs doing this.
Should I get banned from driving? I got stopped for speeding on the M6toll road. Ok, I was going quickly 114Mph. However, as the police man told me, my driving was good, the conditions were good and the car I was in was good. Speed limits have been 70mph for years.... however, cars have been improved since the speed limit was introduced. They are much safer, they handle better and have more safety features than the older car. I normally drive at 70 if its possible on motorways (depending on traffic) , but the M6toll I pay to go on so that I can get to London quicker from Manchester. If I lose my license, I lose my job. To use public transport to get to work would be a 3hour journey on 2 buses and a tram. Thats 6hours travel a day. (By the way, watch out for a dark blue Volvo S70 on the toll road, they are there cos its easy pickings... They cant catch you on any other motorway as there is too much traffic, you can hardly get over 65!) Hmm, response so far is interesting. For those who have not driven on the M6toll, It is very similar to the German Autobahns, where 40% of the autobahn has an unrestricted speed limit. (Very low traffic volume) Also it is a private road, the olny speed signs are next to the toll booths where you have to pay for the privelage of driving on the road, hmmm, more good comments, I would like to add, The police car followed me for over 2Km to get an average speed. (Is this safe?) Also, I know I did wrong, it was a fair cop, as soon as they flashed their blue lights, I pulled over and stopped. Im not asking what you think of me as a driver, I am simply asking should I get banned? Im still awaiting Court summons... 3 Hour journey is from my house to Work, both of which are in Manchester. no direct route, so its 2 buses then a tram, then a 20minute walk. I know I can get to london quickly by train or 40mins on the plane.
If the World was so Safe before Bush took Office,How do you Explain this List??????? American Victims of Mideast Terrorist Attacks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a listing of incidents in which Americans are known to have been killed by Middle East-based terrorists. The list will be updated as more information becomes available. The exact number of American casualties is difficult to calculate because of incomplete news reports regarding numbers and nationalities of those injured. The toll from the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center is also uncertain, but current figures place the number of dead above 3,000. The number of dead at the Pentagon and on the hijacked airliners numbered approximately 385. Since Yasser Arafat "renounced" violence in the Oslo Peace Accords on September 13, 1993, at least 53 Americans have been murdered and at least another 83 Americans have been injured by Palestinian terrorism. Excluding the September 11 attacks, approximately 700 Americans have been killed and 1,600 wounded in terrorist attacks since 1970. This list also includes injured Americans since Oslo 1993. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- February 23, 1970, Halhoul, West Bank. September 8, 1974, Athens, Greece. TWA Flight 841, flying from Tel Aviv to New York, made a scheduled stop in Athens. Shortly after takeoff, it crashed into the Ionian Sea and all 88 passengers were killed, including 32-year-old Steven R. Bosh of Madison, CT, Seldon and Etan Bard of Tuckahoe, NY, Dr. and Mrs. Frederick Stohlman of Newton, MA, Don H. Holiday of Mahwah, NJ, and Jon L. Chesire of Old Lyme, Ct; all of which were Almerican citizens. An investigation of the crash conclusively established that it was caused by explosives set in the rear cargo department of the plane. June 29, 1975, Beirut, Lebanon. The PFLP kidnapped the U.S. military attaché to Lebanon, Ernest Morgan, and demanded food, clothing and building materials for indigent residents living near Beirut harbor. August 11, 1976, Istanbul, Turkey. The PFLP launched an attack on the terminal of Israel's major airline, El Al, at the Istanbul airport. Four civilians, including Harold Rosenthal of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were killed and 20 injured. January 1, 1977, Beirut, Lebanon. Frances E. Meloy, U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, and Robert O.Waring, the U.S. economic counselor, were kidnapped by PFLP members as they crossed a militia checkpoint separating the Christian from the Muslim parts of Beirut. They were later shot to death. March 11, 1978, Tel Aviv, Israel. Gail Rubin, niece of U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff, was among 38 people shot to death by PLO terrorists on an Israeli beach. Although an Iranian special unit ended the incident by storming the plane and arresting the terrorists, the Iranian government might also have been involved in the hijacking. June 14, 1985, Between Athens and Rome. Two Hizballah members hijacked a TWA flight en route to Rome from Athens and forced the pilot to fly to Beirut. The terrorists, believed to belong to Hizballah, asked for the release of members of the group Kuwait 17 and 700 Shi'ite prisoners held in Israeli and South Lebanese prisons. The eight crewmembers and 145 passengers were held for 17 days during which one of the hostages, Robert Stethem, a U.S. Navy diver, was murdered. But U.S. Navy fighters intercepted the Egyptian aircraft flying the terrorists to Tunis and forced it to land at the NATO airbase in Italy, where the terrorists were arrested. Two of the terrorists were tried in Italy and sentenced to prison. The Italian authorities however let the two others escape on diplomatic passports. Others, however, were tried including Yassir Shraidi and Musbah Eter, arrested in Rome in August 1997 and extradited; and also Ali Chanaa, his wife, Verena Chanaa, and her sister, Andrea Haeusler. would you like a free oystercard...........? http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article4373717.ece Details of a computer hack which allowed researchers to clone identity cards that are used by million of people to access buildings and travel on public transport are to be published. The company which makes the Mifare smartcard, which is used to gain access to thousands of British schools as well to ride on the London Underground and buses, had sought to prevent Dutch researchers from publishing details of the hack. But a court in Holland has overturned an injunction that would have prevented the publication of the research, paving the way for academics from Radboud University to explain how they were able to ride the Tube free for a day with a cloned Oyster card
Can Bus Drivers refuse your ticket after you have bought it? Today I was travelling by bus, using a childs unlimite daily travel ticket. I used it twice without any problems, but on the third bus the driver told me I was too old. However, the age has always been up to 16, if it really has changed they havn't made the oublic fully aware. Anyway, I had to pay another £1.70 for a short adult single fare. Is it right and proper that this bus driver should refuse a ticket that another bus driver allowed me to purchase, without my prior knowledge that it should be refused. it is by law that I should be allowed home as I am technically a child. Why is public transport expensive and awful everywhere except London? Next time I shall go by train, it's quicker cheaper and I don't have to deal with bus drivers. I had a citizen card and it didn't have anything to do with that. I am 15 and he wouldn't accept that. the other bus company in the area won't give child unless you have ID and it is 15 for them. He was being ignorant anyway. I've had enough anyway, too many bus drivers have got to me. They should try harder in their exams in the first place, not take it out on us. He just did it to torture me. I was traveling on Wilts and Dorset Buses in Bournemouth. No offense (see above) to the bus driver who has really helped, thanks. As I said no offence to bad Andy. But most bus drivers are moodiest people I have ever met. Do they really get payed that much?
labour say they are going to go ahead with road pricing because? there is no alternative,if they really where that concerned about congestion and enviroment issuses, surley they would make Public transport better and cheaper. To travel 3 miles (for 3 of us ) by bus to the local shops where i live ,would cost me £6.30 return. and to travel to London would cost £200 return by train for the 3 of us. they know we will use our cars anyway so is this another stealth tax. Any views on this?
Daily Family bus & tram tickets? Anybody know if there's such a daily family bus ticket that you can buy around Paris to let you use public transport for the whole day without having to pay for everytime you get on a bus? Something like what you'd do in London.
Welcome to violent Scotland.......................? Nine out of ten women live in terror of attack NINE in ten young women are terrified of being attacked on the streets of Scotland. Most fear being raped, many have been followed and others report having their drinks spiked. They blame a country awash with booze and drugs and feel they are less safe than they were a decade ago. But the first Safety on the Streets study of 2000 women revealed three in four fail to take sufficient care when they have been drinking. Most are afraid of going on public transport late at night, yet just one per cent carry a personal alarm. Today's young women are as afraid of being beaten up by other girls as they are of being attacked by men. The survey shows that nearly all young women are terrified of being attacked when they are out on Britain's streets. More than nine in 10 fear a physical or verbal assault. It revealed they were regularly sworn at, others had their drinks spiked and many were followed by unwanted admirers. Scotland was considered to be among the most dangerous places, and most blamed a society fuelled by booze and drugs. A minority had been mugged or sexually assaulted. Some had been raped. But they were just as afraid of other women as they were of men - a third had been set upon by other girls. The survey, commissioned by More magazine, questioned 2000 women with an average age of 21 from across the UK. Its editor Donna Armstrong said: "Young women today want better standards of behaviour in society and they have a basic human right to be safe, regardless of whether they are wearing a short skirt." Nearly all the Scottish women who replied felt the streets were safer 10 years ago and most had been attacked or had witnessed violence on the streets. Most blamed booze and drugs for the change. Glasgow was named the fourth most dangerous city in Britain, after London, Birmingham and Manchester, while Edinburgh was named the second most dangerous place in Scotland and the ninth in the UK. Two-thirds said they had been followed on a night out and a quarter suffered memory loss after having their drinks spiked. But despite their fears, 71 per cent admitted forgetting about their safety altogether after a few drinks. And just one per cent carried a personal alarm with them at all times. Two in three women were so afraid of being attacked they did not feel safe walking around in daylight. And just 16 per cent felt the countryside was a safe place to walk alone. Nine in 10 wanted a bouncer on late-night buses and trains to protect them and others feared using taxis after a night out. Only 15 per cent admitted feeling safe on their local bus, while just one said they would willingly go to a train station after dark. And two-thirds were nervous about using private hire taxis and one in 10 claimed a driver made a pass at them. Most believed the police and the legal system were not doing enough to ensure their safety. Armstrong added: "Young women are taking precautions and doing their best to protect themselves but the law isn't doing enough to protect them. "Weak sentencing just doesn't work."
