Location Transport

Can someone give me information about Ierapetra in Crete?

I'm going to book a holiday to Crete. Friends have booked into a hotel in Ierapetra - all inclusive. I've looked at tour operaters on line and they don't seem to offer self catering there. Does any know of any nearby resorts where we could get self catering? We'd like to visit our friends a couple of times so any info on public transport would also be helpful. thank you
