Any Good areas to rent in downtown Vancouver, Canada?

I am a young English guy who is moving to Vancouver in August or September this year to live and work there for a year. Does anyone know any safe and good areas to live that are not too pricey to rent in Shared House/Flat with good public transport links to other areas of Vancouver nearby? If anyone already has any contact details with of places to rent in advance I would very much appreciate it.
