Public transport in Honolulu?
I am leaving for Honolulu tomorrow with my father. We're flying via US Air Force Space-A and will be landing at Hickam AFB. How is the public transport around that area? We plan on going to Pearl Harbor and the Hale Koa military resort. Any tips would be a great help! Also, are there discount rates for senior citizens? Day passes? I live in Chicago and I prefer to walk and take public transportation. I would appreciate any tips about times and bus routes. Thanks in advance! I visited the website http://www.thebus.org/ but I couldn't seem to get a trip planner working properly.

- the bus system is pretty good and takes you to all those places.
- Of all the times my family and I have stayed on Oahu...we have NEVER once rented a car...it's just not needed...the Public Transit services on Oahu are the best...if you miss a bus there will be another along shortly and they go everywhere around Honolulu...there is something like 1.3 million people on Oahu and 1 million cars...so the traffic is horrendous...you may want to rent a car one day and drive to the other side of the Island (North Shore)...but other than that I would stick to walking and Public Transport...Aloha A Hui Ho
- Route 19 Airport-Hickam/Waikiki Beach & Hotels/Downtown-Aala Park Seems like you bet bet. I take the bus almost everywhere that I need to go.
- fantastic bus system here...almost 24 hours in some areas!!
- Personally, I would go next door to the airport and rent a car. Use Hotwire (nonrefundable), it's only $10-15/day: http://www.hotwire.com/vacation-travel/honolulu-oahu-hawaii.jsp?iid=I118&pid=P174 Then you can drive to the Hale Koa (take Nimitz all the way down), or Pearl Harbor or anywhere else you like. Hale Koa parking is $20/day, or email me if you want to know free locations (you will have to walk 3-4 blocks though) for overnight parking. As you probably know, it's almost impossible to get a reservation (808.955.0555) at the Hale Koa on short notice. The food is very good there, especially for the price. It's about 1/2 what you would pay next door at the Hilton. http://www.halekoa.com/dining_entertainment/restaurants.cfm I would try to stay at Bellows for a few days if you can. 808.259.8080. Go to Pearl Harbor Naval Station. There a lot of foreign ships visiting now. Just show the car rental contract and ID to get a day pass. Or take The Bus. If you go to USS Arizona, go early, early. Less than 1 mile from the Naval Station and Hickam AFB exit is the commissary and Navy exchange. Stock up on food and drinks there, or go to the one at Hickam AFB. Trust me, it is much cheaper. I would buy a cooler and give it away when I left. Email me if you have questions or need more tips when you arrive! My friends tried going to Guam Space A last week but didn't get out. I'm signed up now for USA. Good luck and Aloha!
- From Hickam to the Hale Koa, There may be a complimentary shuttle or bus for military. Otherwise, a Taxi from the base to the hotel may be much easier. The route 19 does go through Hickam, but I believe there a limited stops, and your luggage has to fit on your lap or under the seat. As far as the rest of your trip, check out http://www.thebus.org/ . This is the site for the C&C of Honolulu's Public Bus System. It is pretty comprehensive, and there are links to Google maps transit and Next Bus by Google.
