is there a public transport service from San Francisco airport to Union Square, SF?
My friend and I will be visiting SF in a couple of weeks and we can't wait. Neither of us has been before, and will be flying in at separate times. It would be great to know if there is a reliable shuttle, or bus system to get into the city center

- For $5.35 (one way) take BART from SFO to Powell Street Station. Here's a link to the trip planner for your route: http://bart.gov/stations/quickPlanner/schedule.asp?origin%3DSFIA%26destination%3DPOWEL%26depart%5Fmonth%3D3%26depart%5Fdate%3D23%26depart%5Ftime%3D7%253A30%2BAM%26return%5Fmonth%3D%26return%5Fdate%3D%26return%5Ftime%3D%26trip%5Fmode%3Doneway%26time%5Fmode%3Ddeparts%26depart%5Fdirections%3D%26arrive%5Fdirections%3D%26address%3Daddress%26city%3Dcity%26address2%3Daddress%26city2%3Dcity%26ct%3D1
- SFO has a subway station (International Terminal - Concourse G). On arrival, follow the "BART" and "Rapid Rail Transit" signs to the station. It's a bit confusing if you don't know what you're looking for. They should've used simple and concise "Train to City" signs like in Chicago. But unfortunately, they decided to go this way instead. Once you get there, simply buy your tickets from the automated ticket machines and enter the platform area. The fare is $5.35. For Union Square, you want to get off at Powell Street station. -------- If you have a lot of luggage (or don't feel comfortable using the subway), shuttle buses from SFO cost $14-17 for the Union Square area. http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/tofrom/transp-serv/to-sf/dtd.html
- Although BART will save you a few dollars, I'd recommend taking one of the shuttle services for convenience. It will drop you right at the address where you're staying. The shuttle services are on the departure level.
- BART will take you from SFO to Powell Street Station (which is pretty close to Union Square)
- There is a train that runs from the airport to Union Square. I caught it when I was staying there and would recommend it, as it is a lot faster and cheaper than catching a cab!
- There are a few methods of public transportation BART is good if you have a roller type suitcase. Not recommended if you have a lot of luggage. From SFO $5.35 per person. For Union Square area hotels, get off at Powell Street and either walk or catch a taxi by the Parc 55 Hotel. The Powell Street station is 3 blocks from Union Square itself. Shuttles are available for abiut $15 per person and will take you to your hotel (with a few stops on route) If you have more than 2 people, it's a better deal to take a taxi than a shuttle. Taxi fare is about $40
- Take BART (a lite rail system) from SFO international terminal to BART Powell St station. About $5.35 from 4am to midnite (I think). Will take you about 30minutes (a cab in rush hour traffic will take an hour). Type in San Francisco, CA on maps.yahoo.com, look along Market St, the symbol M in a blue square is a BART Station.
