Should bottled water be banned...?
Mayor Bans Bottled Water for City Offices AP Posted: 2007-06-23 22:49:09 SAN FRANCISCO (June 23) - Is city water better than bottled water? Mayor Gavin Newsom thinks so. Newsom has issued an executive order banning city departments from buying bottled water, even for water coolers. The ban goes into effect July 1, and will extend to water coolers by Dec. 1. The move was billed as a way to help stem global warming and save taxpayer money. "We're hoping to set the example for the private sector and other cities in getting off the bottle," said Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the San Francisco public utilities commission. In a press release announcing the decision, the mayor cited the environmental impact of making, transporting and disposing of the bottles. More than a billion of them end up in the state's landfills each year, the release said. Would you support banning bottled water in your city...?

- I support any ban which keeps my local government from spending money unnecessarily. Bottled water is an unnecessary expense.
- I actually really like my city water. However, I can understand why, bottling water actually uses a huge amount of petroleum. Most bottled water is simply filtered water. A good filter and a Nalgene would save peoples wallets and a whole lot of petroleum.
- I think banning bottled water in offices is ok. At my last job we had water coolers and I would bring my own cup in from home to drink from.
- No and never. This is typical of liberal fascism. What is now going on is liberals use every pet projects of control and bring in the global warming scam to try and force people to change.
- Yes, tap water is strictly regulated, therefore you are sfer drinking it versus bottled water which is not a closely watched. Also bottled water sometimes had chemicals and minerals added to it to enhance the flavor, never mind the waste of the plastic bottles that are filling our dumps and cause us to use even more petroleum products in their productions.
- San Francisco is a very funny place. They really have no grip on reality, which makes them a lot of fun to watch. They are much more fun than any professional comedian.
- So tell him to push RECYCLING; people need water it is the only thing out there besides milk that is good for you to drink. Nobody likes city water if he bans bottled water no one will drink water and that is a health hazard. On top of that there would still be pop bottles in the landfills that people will drink in place of water and they'll probably be a lot more cases of kidney failure maybe he's a sicko and he wants everybody in the hospital so he can profit off the tax revenue
- Not everyone has city water. Some have wells. While treatment systems keep well water safe, it sometimes still doesn't taste all that great. Are they going to extend city water so it is available to everyone? Also, water treatment systems are expensive. Some simply cannot afford them. So, their water may not even be exactly safe to drink.
- I am old enough to remember when water didn't come in bottles you had to take your drinks from the school drinking fountain or the park fountain. Most of the time the water was gross because people would put used tissues, paper, gum and other crap in the fountain and they knew that germs were being spread around town that way but there was no alternative at the time. Once you take a drink from a public drinking fountain you would know better than to think that would be a good deal to ban bottled water!!
- No. There was a guest on some TV show (I forget which one) the other day - an 8th grader who had an extraordinary biology project. For this class he tested the water at the school water fountains, which were found to be filthy. In fact, they were much dirtier than the toilets. That school had just banned water bottles. Now they are rethinking that. We have city water and it stinks. We have a dual filter on all the inside water. We recycle everything we can, including all water bottles.
- The only way i could see banning bottled if in fact the water is not purified as advertised. On the other hand if the water really is treated and processed well then we should leave it alone. Sometimes it is not safe to drink the city water.
- Fluoride should be banned from water as in Europe for 50 years Fluoridation / Fluoride Toxic Chemicals In Your Water http://www.holisticmed.com/fluoride/ Fluoride Conspiracy http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=14949 "Tell a lie loud enough and long enough and people will believe it." - Adolf Hitler "Fluoridation is the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century." - Robert Carlton, Ph.D, former EPA scientist, 1992 DENTAL HEALTH Letter from Gerard F. Judd, Ph. D., Chemist, Researcher for 18 years and Professor of Chemistry for 33 yrs. http://goodteeth.tripod.com/judd.htm Dear Government Executive and Employee: We can all stop spending billions for American dental work and research. Let me tell you why: I have learned the real causes of dental cavities and gum infection. People, including you, will now be able to take care of their own dentistry with insignificant cost, and end with perfect teeth. Cavities and gum infections are ended! http://i.am/jah/heal.htm
- I agree with the mayor. You pay for water already so get it and drink it from a coke bottle
- The plastic containers are a problem. Recycling is the answer to that. Most city water is fine to drink. Unfortunately where I live the tap water is undrinkable. I and everyone else in town refill gal. jugs at machines. I use tap water for cooking, even coffee. It's okay for that, but no one here can drink from the tap.
- No!!!!!
- Who gives a rat's a** what San Francisco does? City officials there have been illustrating for years their ineptitude for solving problems.
