Who is the best company for shipping a motorbike from UK to Denmark?

I am selling a motocross bike on Ebay, and a buyer from Denmark has expressed an interest and wants to know shipping costs - I don't know which company to go with as this export lark is all new to me!! Any ideas / recommendations? Cheers all.

  1. put it in a van transit style ,strap it down ,front and rear and fogget about it and off you go ,on the return load up with a selection of booze and fags ,,just for your own use ok and your van hire is paid for.
  2. Your best bet if you want to ship it unaccompanied would be to contact a freight frowarder who will be able to arrange a LCL (shared container) or a groupage (shared trailer) shipment for you. Container is safer - it is a metal box while a trailer has canvas curtains. You will want to ship it "CIF" (Cost, Insurance and Freight). It won't be cheap - you're looking at at least £450 plus VAT to ship a 400cc bike as a groupage item. (I worked for six years as a FF.) If you do not live in an area accessible to a 40ft trailer they may ask you to take the machine to a loading place where it can be loaded using a forklift truck. You would then have to arrange for crating materials to be available at that location. You would be well advised to crate the machine as groupage trailers stop at several destinations and you don't want some clown running his forklift through the petrol tank while he's unloading someone else's gear or while it is being trans-shipped between trailers. I can promise you that the cost of crating is horrendous. Container and trailer shipping costs are calculated on the volume of the item being shipped. Length x Width x Height = Volume. You will also need to note the gross (crated) and nett (uncrated) weights of the machine. Make sure that the carrier provides a certificate of insurance. You will need to provide a Dangerous Goods Note, even if the petrol tank is empty, in order for that insurance to be effective, although some carriers will waive this requirement. If a DGN is required, the FF will complete it on your behalf. While I was doing the job, I found that shipping charges can often be cheaper when the booking is made from the Danish side. Tell your prospect to talk to either "Freja" (pron. Frayuh) or "RH Freight" over there, either directly or via a FF. In all honesty, though, you and your customer might be better off if you got a return ferry ticket from Immingham, Harwich or Tilbury and rode the bike from Copenhagen to where he lives (don't forget to reverse the dip on your headlight). Then get him to give you a lift back to Copenhagen or get the train. Still not cheap, but you'd get to see the scenery and passenger ferries don't require DGNs. To help you find out which passenger ferry lines run from each dock, here are some contact numbers for you: Tilbury Docks (01375) 842663 Main Entrance, App Road, Tilbury Docks RM18 7JN Tilbury Alfa Port (Port of Immingham) (01469) 574808 Fax: (01469) 577083 West Gates, Humber Road Immingham DN40 2QX Harwich Dock Co Ltd (01255) 241341 Fax: (01255) 245215 The Navel House, Kings Quay Street Harwich CO12 3JJ Hope you find it all helpful.
