When shipping to Canada, UPS asks me for retail and selling price. What are they?

I want to ship a computer to Canada (from USA). It is a very old one and is barely worth $100.00. I was planning to ship it via UPS, and they are asking me for the retail and the selling prices. What are they? Also since the computer is just worth around $100.00, I do not want to pay a lot of tax and tarrifs. So how do I avoid that? I dont want to do something illegal, but a legal way to pay the least tax? Or are items which cost are under $200.00 or something get exempted from tax? Thanks Steve

  1. You might want to go on Fedex.com they have a duties and tax estimator so you can see about what you have to pay. Usually if you use USPS they go easy on the taxes but the recipent pays the tax
  2. When you ship things from one country to another, the country importing the product likes to have an idea of what's coming in AND how much it's worth. It's a standard procedure that you'll have to deal with almost anywhere.
