How do businesses come up with shipping rates? Please Help.?

They have different products and different weights yet they base the cost of shiiping on the amount you spend how do they do this?

1. From the corporate stand point, most businesses that have daily pick ups from UPS, or fed x, weight the shipment and double or tripple what it costs them to have the products shop. Marking it up over 100 percent rate. Some businesses don't do that, but the majority do and make a profit from the shipping aspect of it.
