How to go from Tours to St Malo by train/ bus.?

Am visiting France in end May and need to plan my trip. I intend to go from Paris to Tours to and take a day excursion to see the chateaux. Then in evening leave Paris and go to St Malo so I can visit Mont St Michel the next day. I would not be renting car and want to take public transport from Tours to St Malo or Dinard.

1. As far as I can tell from checking the SNCF website, to go by train from Tours to St. Malo requires traveling from Tours to Paris, changing trains (and stations) and going to Rennes and then changing trains again to get to St. Malo. The entire trip takes over 5 1/2 hours. So it would appear that your itinerary is probably not the most efficient.
