By train to Tatra mountains?

How can we get to a central place in the Tatra mountains, Slovakia, from a capital, e.g. Budapest by train(s)? All travel agencies only suggest traveling by car but it's far and we would like to use public transport, then probably rent a car in Tatra. Anybody with experience? Thanks.

  1. The Tatra mountains are also in POLAND. Unless you must be in Slovakia, then an easy way is to fly or gte the train to Krakow, hire a car at the airport or station and drive to Zakopane which is a pleasant town in the Tatra mountains with easy access to lovely mountain-country stocked with wild animals. It is about an hour from Krakow. Slightly to the north is the primeval forest which you might also enjoy visiting.
