What is the best, cheapest way to transport a car from Portugal to the United States?

I am looking for the most economical way to do this. I have no idea of any companies or what process I need to go through to get the car here. This is my husband's BMW that he is not willing to part ways with. Lots of people move cars here... I just need advice from someone who has already done so.

1. you will need a lot of wishful thinking or a good phone book
2. I would say become friends with a military guy stationed over there and is coming back to the States soon. He can claim the car as his and the military will pay for the move. Offer to give him/her a few hundred and you just moved your car the cheapest way possible.
3. There would seem to be absolutely no reason to ship a car from Portugal, Spain to America. It's kind of like figuring out an economical way to bring 25 tons of sand to your local beach. Sell the car in Portugal and buy a new one here. Beside even if you were able to ship the car here, the car might night pass USA inspection. Then you would be spending hundreds of dollars trying to convert the car to American standards.
