What kind of car would you recommend with good mpg?

What would be the best car that fits the following criteria: Cheap Has over 30 mpg Compact Hybrids won't work, I live in the country. All this car needs to do is to transport me back and forth from school and work. Give recommendations please!

4. I'd buy a SMART. Small (you can park 2 of them in a parking spot), cheapish, proven (have been used in Europe for YEARS).
5. The chevy Cobalt. It cheap at under 17000. It drives fine, i rented one last week. It also give you like 32 mpg on the high way (that's how much i got at least). It was a 4 passenger and me and a friend (he's 6'4" and about 260, i'm much smaller) fit in there fine. Good luck. Buying a car is a big decision.
6. Toyota Corolla provides value, reliability and good gas mileage.
