is it really true that people with ocd are generally intelligent?
Recent research has revealed a possible genetic mutation that could be the cause of OCD. Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have found a mutation in the human serotonin transporter gene, hSERT, in unrelated families with OCD. This research has found that: Sufferers are generally of above-average intelligence, as the very nature of the disorder necessitates complicated thinking patterns.

- Yes, the research out there seems to support this more and more. On a side note, the people I know with OCD are generally bright people.
- I hope so.
- From what I understand, there is no link between intelligence and OCD. OCD folks are usually high performers because they can't help obsessing over things. They work very hard. Actually intelligence , most all people do not ever work anywhere near their potential. An OCD might be average intelligence in numbers but might score higher because they work harder and are more prepared. OCD could can be high, med, or low in actual intelligence. Getting an accurate diagnosis of true OCD is quite difficult. I met a young Doctor (Neonatal Internist) last spring, she told me that the OCD / ADHH drugs are the most abused drugs in medical school right now. The reason the drugs are being sought after , if because, students want to use the meds to help them improve focus and lose weight. Crazy world we live in.
- Not always... Just neurotic.
- absolutely! the sufferer uses their brain to sort out the most complicated details. if the disorder is properly treated, most people can and do important jobs that require very close attention to detail. they are usually quick witted and sensitve to the details around them, that most of us dont notice, wich makes them important members of society. have you ever watched the show caled Monk? the main character is an exallent example of the things i have described, if you are that interested in your question, try a peek at this show, and you will get entertaining and great answer to your inquiry.
- Then, why are so many people with Down's so obsessive, compulsive as they go about their day? Having to sit in THIS chair, drink from THIS drinking fountain, need to have the same book or object in their hands at the same time every day, and the person I'm related to refuses to wear anything on her body that is not the color red. Even the foods need to be certain ones at certain times, or there is a major explosion and melt-down.
