Why do they keep making unbelievable sci-fi TV show?

aliens that look like humans, transporters, faster then light space ships. That is not scifi. Thats fantasy. I really hate it when they try to mix comedy with scifi. Its never funny. When they do make a show that is somewhat plausable the stories are lame, like Jake 2.0.

  1. the viewers are getting stupider.
  2. Well, a lot of what is considered to be "sci-fi" is really not. For example: Star Wars is not sci-fi, but it is entertaining. Contact with Jodie Foster is more sci-fi, but not everyone really liked it.
  3. Because film makers have forgotten the true meaning of making a film which is good entertainment and instead most of them don't want to spend much but their only thought is to real in money
  4. I doubt you'll agree with me, but Sci-fi is fantasy. It just happens that it's fantasy with a lot of technology and usually set in space. Didn't Rod Serling say something along the lines of "Science fiction is making the improbable possible and fantasy is making the impossible probable." As most people define sci-fi as fantasy with technology that makes Star Trek, Star Wars, etc sci-fi. I do think you are correct in saying that sci-fi is generally unfunny. Shows like Dr Who and Star Trek seem to be able to throw in humor a little easier, but it could be due to the fact that the writing is generally better.
  5. Although sci-fi makes stupid shows like star trek and who wants to be a super hero, but they do air the best shows on television like replieys belive it or not and dead like me. If you watch sci-fi on Sundays at 10/9 eastern standard time you will be able to see dead like me. It has action, drama suspense and comedy:)
  6. They make unbelievable sci-fi because that is what people watch. It is all about ratings and money, and if people watch it, they will show it. Although, I think the aliens that look like humans things is also due to the limitations of budget, especially for older shows. Regarding your basic premise, though, I have to say, in my opinion, if it involves aliens and spacecraft and pseudo/future science, it is sci-fi rather than fantasy in my book, no matter how implausible the actual science. I nitpicked with the best of them about Star Trek: TNG, but I watched and enjoyed, despite the fact that it did not correlate well to what I was learning in my college science classes. I think entertainment should be paramount over accuracy in fictional programs. I watch Nova and the like for true science. However, that being said, if you want a more realistic sci-fi show that is still highly entertaining, I'd recommend Battlestar Galactica. There is a reason it is on most critics' best of the year lists; it is really, really good. I also (so far, as I am only in the second season on dvd) cannot fault the science too much.
  7. Let's see . . . Science FICTION . . . not necessarilly true. Fantasy to me are movies like Labrynth, Trilogy of the Rings, stuff like that. I find most of the current genre of SciFi cool . . . Eureka rocks with it's tongue and cheek thing happening - Stargate SG 1 and Atlantis with the wisecracks just tears me up. I like it in any event.
  8. It's fiction. You can't really make fiction believable. I mean, if you've ever heard of a realistic science fiction, then let me know what it is... last time I checked most sci-fi's aren't believable for some reason. I mean... for example Heroes. Its great, the characters are believable, it takes place in an ACTUAL world with ACTUAL technology... but they all have random superpowers and can do weird stuff. How is that believable??? It's meant to be entertainment, not a realistic look at life. If you don't like it stop watching it. Simple as that. EDIT: I agree with you Sassy 5 Souls
