Is anyone else offended by the new US Department of Transportation anti-DUI ads?
The ads show drivers in cars filled with liquids symbolising beer, ligour, and wine. When an officer pulls the vehicle over and opens the car door the liquid pours out. To me its almost like a comedy especially if a child viewed it not knowing the tragedy of drunk driving. Having lost a friend to a drunk driver over 30 years ago its not funny and the ad offends me!!! This is a serious issue and the ad should take that tact. Bush is not - If you consider laws against drunk driving and our local police arresting criminals on the streets then I am glad we live in one!! Jake - don't be an idiot realize that drunk drivers kill others on the road. My friend was in a car with her boyfriend not drinking and their car was hit by an idiot who like you thinks its all right to have drunk a half case of beer and go driving through stop signs.

- I wish it was Germany, I could get some decent beer for a change and no one would pull me over after drinking any of it! They wouldn't dare! What was your friend doing in the same vehicle as a drunk driver when it crashed? I know I can drink a half case and still stop at all the stops! I know how much I can drink. I am not some kid having his first drink. As someone else once said a man has to know his limits, and I do! All of this can be controlled by simply having a device in the steering column that continually monitors the driver and is connected to the accelerator and the ignition, but the manufacturers refuse to build them with these devices so more idiots that don't know how to drink continue to kill others!Stop whining and learn how to live because the drunks are always going to be around!
- I've never seen that one but I do agree with you.
- The ads are to get your attention. Works doesn't it? They are there to let you know that law enforcement will be actively watching for drinking drivers. They are not meant to be funny. In advertisments, this is called "puffery". Overstating a product or idea. I get more upset with the anti-tobacco ads that have the Directors clapboard that has the letters WTDAFXUP. Try explaining that to your kid.
- I'm more offended by seeing a whole family get killed by a drunk driver. Maybe we should show real accident scenes instead of the commercial that offends you, how bout showing the booking process at jail? Sir, what I find offensive, is the millions of innocent people that have been hurt or killed by drunk drivers. So whatever it takes to dissuade a person from drinking and driving, I'm all for it. I don't give a damn if you or anyone is offended, maybe people will be offended enough not to drink and drive!
- The ad is just an exaggeration...Like it's that obvious that a person is drunk... Just deal with it or ignore it if you have a problem... If I had it my way, they'd show released photos of wrecks caused by drunk drivers to scare the living crap out of people instead of making it look funny to those who don't get the point...
- Yes, they are disrepectful and portray the crime of drunk driving in a light hearted manner.
- I haven't seen these commericals either, but as sort of a correlary to what Sensible Man said, if they're anything like the anti tobacco ads, it's a disgrace. I don't like serious issues being taken lightly. You can call it an attention getter or whatever, but if you want to get people's attention just show a grave yard or something and the number of people killed by drunk drivers every year. In 2005 there were 16,885. That number has been fairly consistent throughout the late 90s-00s. That doesn't even take into accoun the number of people injured, just the deaths. It's a serious problem, and not something to be taken lightly, even if you think 'oh, well people will pay more attention if you make it amusing.' No, people will pay more attention if you show them the harm it causes. Jake, By the way, I happen to live in Germany (US Army stationed here). The Germans do like to drink. But they don't mess around at all when it comes to drunk driving. Legal limit here for BAC is .025, compared to .08 in most states. At every fest cops are everywhere, and they'll haul you off to jail if they even think you're ging to drink and drive, and ask questions, run tests later. Just to clear up any confussion. Don't be an idiot. I'm down for the sarcastic answer 90% of the time. But when it comes to something that's litterally killing thousands a year, have some sense of decency.
- I have seen those commercials. I thought they were well done and not funny at all. I have a feeling "Jake" will be in prison soon for vehicular homicide.
