Location Transport

Is it cheaper to hire a car in USA or use public transport?

I'm from Australia and I'm looking at travelling right around America in 2010 going to all the important places!

1. It really depends on your destination. Where are you trying to go?
2. public transportation. in new york its 2 dollars to take either the bus or subway (one way) and its actually a lot faster esp. because theres always traffic. taking a taxi/cab could be extremely expensive. possibly 50$ verses 2$....hmmmmmmm
3. In southern california a monthly pass costs $64 and I have unlimited access to trains and buses. With gas being almost at $4 a gallon its a good deal to use public transport to commute to work. I only use a car if I need to stop and do errands and carry stuff around.
