What software do companies use to automate shipping ?

When I receive a package and it has a adhesive UPS Ground label on it, as well as the address information, what program(s) was that generated in? This seems like the best way to streamline shipping, as orders come in to a business, the customer information is transmitted to software, package weighed, and a label printed. Any idea how this happens?

1. Those shipping packages costs THOUSANDS, requires specialized printer such as Zebra label printers to print, and often, a special server. You can do almost the same thing on the UPS website. Why bother?
