How is the public transportation system in Houston, Texas?

Do they have a subway system similar to the likes of NY and MA? Further, how are the buses? Dependable? Crappy? Any insight would help me? Is it possible to survive without a car for a month and depend on the public transportation?

1. no! no! no! sweetie! It bites big time! No subway and by the time you get to where your going on the bus, it won't be worth the trip! There is a metro train, like a bus tram, but it doesn't run the course of the whole city. Trust me. Get a mapsco, learn the city, and rent a car for a month or buy a small used one then sell it. It's close to impossible to get around without one. And the traffic sucks! sucks! sucks!
