Is tracking a cell phone possible?

I have reason to believe my s.o. is not going to work when he leaves the house, and may in fact have lost his job. I have tried confronting him and he assures me all is well. I heard on the radio once that it is possible to track a cell phone's location with the number. Is that true? If so, where can I do so? Added: I am not sure if I can trust him or not; I am trying to find out. >.< Also, I cannot ask for him at work because he works at a call center and they don't really work that way.

2. It has to have GPS in it. Wouldn't just calling his work and asking to speak with him do the same thing? But if you can't trust your SO why the hell are you even with him?
