What would be the Cheapest transport around Ireland?

Me and a friend are planning a week away to Ireland. We plan on touring the country - visiting all the sites etc. But i was just wondering what would be the cheapest means of transport. We originally was going to hire a car. Which would be cheaper:- Car or Train ? Also where do you recommend going/staying?? Thanks x

3. Trains don't go to 'all the sites' - and anyway, you'll never get to all the sites in just a week! Only if you had your own helicopter, maybe, and could still jump the queues. Concentrate on one area in the country, and don't attempt to cover all the country, you'll never get out of your car if you do. Irish roads are not build for large volumes of high-speed traffic. If you want to see the sites, you will need a car. So you have to decide now if you really want the sites or if you really want to save money. You could also check out the bus options - buses do go to more places than trains, but the times are not always the best. The website for the bus service is www.buseireann.ie. For trains, it's www.irishrail.ie. Tourist offices can also advise you on local tour operators that go to sites from the cities.

6. I can't say for sure - but I'm thinking renting a car would be cheaper - the trains are overly expensive, like it was fifty six euro for a train from cork to dublin.
7. A car will give you more freedom.Galway, Dublin, Donegal, Killarney. etc.etc. There are so many places to see. Take your time, enjoy the craic(fun) and come back again.
8. Train is the cheapest, specially after 9am when there is a third off. As with a car you have to hire it, then pay insurance on-top and the insurance is more expensive if you take it over the boarder.
9. train would prob be cheaper cos with a car you have to pay the rental, insurance and then petrol on top of that. www.irishrail.ie sometimes has special prices if you take a train at certain times, so check their website. That said, a car is a lot more convenient, the train wont go to all the tourist sites. There are a lot of different companies that rent cars, so google them and see if you can find the best price. You may want to consider a bus - there is some tourist buses that would bring you to the actual sites. Or maybe you could do a combination of both e.g. if you're in dublin and wanted to go west, you could take the train west, then rent a car when you get there.
10. Car is the best - and stay in local Band Bs they are ace. eat as much as possible at breakfast and that should do you for the day!!
11. I think you are being over ambitious here. There is no way that you will tour the country and see all the sights in 7 days. Best thing to do is pick a county ( 32 of them ) and spend a week there. That way you will get a genuine appreciation of the place and the culture. There is no point in rushing about, relax and soak up the atmosphere.
