Can a leak in the gas tank enter the cabin of a Subaru Imperza?

I just transported my car across the country. I noticed a gas-like smell to the car the day it was delivered. The next day I was driving it and the smell was still there and was strong. I looked in the back seat and the floor behind the passenger side seat was soaked with gasoline. Is this something that could be caused by a leak or is it something that was spilled by the auto transporter?

  1. dont see how fuel would get inside any cars floor for any reason other than someone spilling it into it.. id be looking under it or under the hood but if you dont see any leaking im sure it was done by drive of transport but for what reason i couldnt say.. could have be been a junk car above yours maybe id cal them company that was doing the hual and start talking with them about it dont see any way your car can or could leak fuel up into car so best guess it was a car above yours leaking.. seems like only way and they should cover it if thats the case
  2. I don't believe fuel will enter but the smell will. At any rate fix the leak ASAP.
  3. Does your Impreza happen to be a 2002/2003 WRX? (aka bugeye). If so, then the smell of gasoline is something many of those owners encounter. Generally, there is a plug behind/below the passenger seats, which in low temperatures contracts and allows fumes from the tank to enter the cabin. In terms of the actual gasoline being on the floor, this could also be a byproduct of that plug. Hope that helped.
