my boyfriend has a 71 vw transporter bus and he doesn't know where the heater fan goes?

my boyfriend is trying to replace a fan for a heating system for his 1971 vw transporter bus and he doesn't know where it goes and he needs a printable diagram of the heating system.

  1. if it is an air cooled engine there is no heater fan, so dont try to find it because you never will. only a water cooled engine with a radiator can have a heater fan. you need the coolant from the engine to make heat. if theres no coolant from the engine then there is nothing to produce the heat. thats the downfall of an air cooled rngine.
  2. mechanic basically has the right idea. the air cooleds take heat directly from the enigne. just go to your local v-dub repair guy (usually an older, hippy-lookin' dude) and tell him what you want. wait 2-3 days, write a check, and BAM! you have heat. may require a different exhaust system if the one he has is changed
  3. The last post pretty well says it, there is no fan on a 71 Bus. The heater works from the engine as air only, no coolant. The air then passes by the exhaust for some more heat, and is then dethawing your cold pinkies! There are aftermarket companies that offer fans to increase the flow of air, but that usually isn't an issue here in LA!
