How can Public Transportation help assist Rural America?

With the high gasoline prices in the United States, many Americans are looking at using public transportation to get around town and to downtown areas to work. However; in Rural America, Public Transportation is non existence and the only way to get around is by traveling by car only either by driving yourself or car pooling. In your opinion, how can Public Transporation assist in cities that make up Rural America help citizens get to work, school, or to appointments around town?
