What is the cheapest transportation method from Irvine to Stockton?

I was wondering what the cheapest way to get to Stockton is without having to drive the 350 mile route. Is there a way to transfer trains to Northern CA from Southern CA, or perhaps a line of buses that i could transfer off of? I'm not fond of driving since it's like a 6 hour trip, but i could take 6 hours in a bus or train instead. I'm not very familiar with public transportation in California since I've never had to travel farther than around 30 miles from where I live.

1. I live just north of stockton in sacramento and i would suggest greyhound or see if amtrack has bus service i know they do train
2. Two main choices. 1. Greyhound bus. If you choose Greyhound make sure you book travel on a schedule that lists "GLI" as the carrier. Anything else is a contracted Mexican based bus line. 2. Metrolink to Union Station. Amtrak bus to Bakersfield, then Amtrak "San Joaquin" to Stockton.
