Travelling in Berlin-route plan?

I am travelling to Berlin with my family in august. What is the easiest way to get from Schonfeld Airport to Wilhelmstrasse 80, Berlin 10117 by public transport-including any connections. We are staying in Apartments am Brandenburger Tor. Just wondering if anyone has stayed there before and would appreciate your reviews. Thank You.

  1. Get the airport bus from Schonfeld and it will take you to the centre of Berlin. Your hotel is near the Gates so you are pretty central. A taxi is not expensive though (Around 20euros) either so consider and you will get right to your hotel no problem. Not stayed in your hotel but was in Berlin last October. The tours all leave from where you are so you can pick and choose. Most of the tours are wa related as you can imagine but there are bus top tours and walking tours. All of which are great. Have a good time.
  2. The really best thing you can do in Berlin is buy a "BVG Atlas" (a comprehensive map of Berlin's public transport system) and buy a weekly or a "tourist welcome" ticket, and then just ride all the subways, trams, busses, and even local trains. In my personal opinion, Berlin's public transport system is the best in the world. And if you really got stuck in the woods, take your mobile and call a taxi. They're there 24/7.
  3. From Schonefeld airport you can catch a Regional Express train (RE, they're the red double deck trains) directly to the Hauptbahhof. The railway station is 5 minutes walk from the airport terminal and there is a partly covered footpath. The ride into the city is about 15 minutes and the trains are quite frequent. You can also catch an S-Bahn train but that will take about 40 minutes. Listen carefully to the station Tannoy though, they sometimes have platform changes! The Hauptbahnhof is about 10 minutes walk from your apartments. Just leave the station in the direction of the Brandenburg Tor (gate) and start walking. You pass the new government buildings on the way (very smart and modern). Walk past the Reichstag and through the Gate into the road Unter Den Linden. Turn first right into Wilhelmstrasse. This road has security bollards to protect the British Embassy (you see it on the right) against car bombs; walk past the Embassy and straight across the crossroads of Behren Strasse and your flat is just a bit along on from there. If you have heavy luggage take a taxi. It's a few minutes ride. I have no idea what the Apartments am Brandenburg Tor are like because I usually stay in the Hotel Tiergarten (Alt Moabit, near UBhf Turmstrasse). One of the best ways to get familiar with Berlin is to buy a BVG Welcome Card as soon as you arrive. You will find a BVG desk at the airport, or the newsagent will sell them. This is a city Travelcard which is valid on S+U Bahn, Trams, Busses and Regional Express (RE) trains. It comes with a book of discount vouchers. Use them, they're good; and this will also provide you with a great introductory "tour" of things worth seeing and doing. It will supplement an ordinary guide book very well indeed.
