taxi cab not paying the bill?

Yeah so im going to manhattan for three days on vacation and transportation costs are a bitch unless u wanna risk your life in the subway stations. so my question is, what if to get from point a to point b, i got in one of those yellow taxi cabs, then when i got to the destination, i opened the door and made a run for it? what would happen? dont just say get arrested if u think i could be caught tell me how, and yeah i've seen the pursuit of happiness no no need to mention that scene lol.

3. no offense, but i wouldnt run from a taxi driver in manhattan, they are tough. besides being arrested, you could be injured potentially by a shady driver. so i would pay, rather than being laid out by a pissed driver with a gun in the middle of an alley.
4. Yes it is a crime, and you can be punished on both a criminal and civil level should the charges stick. Given most big city cabs have a camera on the passanger in the back (more for security in cases of robbery murder etc than someone skipping the bill), the police would probable end up with a good description of you at the very least. Beyond possible fraud and theft of service charges, you could also suffer from civil suits, and usually if your get punished on a criminal level, the civil court tends to side with the plaintiff. Either way-if you get busted, the cost would be more than just paying the taxi would of ammounted to unless your talking about a state long ride or the like. If you use your common sense, I'm sure you'll be able to make it work. Otherwise, save up a bit more money before going-this way you can actually enjoy your vacation at your lesiure, rather than having to worry if every police officer you go by recognizes you. Stress and vacations-don't mix. Good luck :)
5. It is a crime. You are basically stealing a free cab ride. Many cops are in NY and you will most likely be caught and charged. ALSO assume the cabbies are carrying GUNS. They are not going to risk someone hurting them or screwing them on cab fare. Many of these people have to pay their own gas money and cab licenses are EXPENSIVE! Im talking thousands of dollars to become a cab driver! So dont screw these people over! Dont go to NY if you cant afford it. Or take the subway that is much cheaper! and hello WALK a little too! Dont you dare make a run for it. Would you prefer spending your time in NY in a jail cell at the police station? Or prefer sitting in a hospital or the morgue because the cab driver shot you because he/she is sick of getting screwed over? Think about it. The risks are not worth the cab ride.
