Location Transport

I have some questions regarding my husbands BMT graduation?

1.) did anyone use a flight/hotel booking agent online, and which one was best? (expedia, hotels, hotwire, etc.) 2.) Hoping to stay at the Knights Inn right by the gates, anyone had any past experience here? 3.) My DH's family wants to come, which is great that they are wanting to come, but I have a feeling they will try to interfere with "us" time. Any suggestions on how to politely say I want some time with my husband alone? If I do stay close to base, would you recommend I still rent a car? Or will public transportation be enough?

  1. 1) ok honestly whenever i bought airplane tickets online i have always used expedia, but shop around so you can get the best deal 2) most bases i have been too the area right off post isnt always the best one, but check the hotel on the base since your a spouse you can possibly get a room there and they are usually cheaper but fill up quickly so you might wanna call now. just search the base on yahoo and they will be able to give you a time. 3) honestly i dont think there is any polite way, but maybe talk to them, say that like you wanna spend time with him, i doubt that it will go over to well - my husband is going home to visit his family on his R and R from iraq, so i am kinda in the same boat as you wtih that - but we staying at a hotel o at least some time alone will be good..... but yea you might just have to wait till you get to his duty station before you get time alone. Yea if you have the money i would rent a car, it will make it easier to get around, and proabably cheaper in the long run.....
  2. 1. I've used expedia and cheaptickets.com before. Nothing bad to report, but just shop around...and talk to the airline directly. Go with whatever/whoever is cheapest. 2. The hotels close to the base are usually already booked and usually the higher costs ones...even if they aren't that nice. Look for a hotel within a 5 mile radius and see what you can find. (You will not get on-base housing. Basic Trainees will not be able to ask to get you on-base. Plus, think of the hundreds of other people graduating at the same time. Lackland does not have enough rooms to allow this to happen.) 3. Sit down with your family and say, "Hey, I totally support you wanting to come, but I really need to see my husband on an intimate level." If they are adults they will understand and 1) go with you but stay in the background or 2) won't go because they understand. I don't know if you and your husband want/plan on spending ever single moment together in bed. If you are then you need to let that be known. 4. I would rent a car no matter what. You're not going to be able to navigate the base at all without a car. No other option here.
  3. I love Expedia. There rates are great and you will often find Hotels that you never knew existed that are very nice. I used them many times! The Knight Inn in a "Kinight"mare. I stayed there when i went to visit my husband while he was in Basic (he had Pnuemonia, he was very ill and they authorized a visit). The locks didn't work. The "peephole" was just a HOLE with toilet paper in it and there were Prostitutes and Drug Dealers all over the place. This was the one time I didn't book online but just drove by in the daytime and booked a room. It was a nightmare epecially since I had a 9 month old with me. I stayed until the sun came up and then went to Howard Johnson which was EXCELLENT! You aren't going to have a whole lot of "us" time. He can display no PDA while on base and while in uniform. Don't expect to have sex. There's not that much time. Don't be selfish with him. His family has missed him too! You will have all the alone time you need when you get stationed at your first base and your family and his family are miles and miles and miles away. Don't ruin his graduation by making a fuss with his family over "alone time". Good Luck and Congrats to him! Yes, you will need to rent a car. There is no public transportation that runs from the base to the local hotels.
