How much would it cost to spending the summer in california?

Ok so before i go to uni i was thinking about spending a month out in america, how much would it cost? Is it a bad idea as none of us drive and would would have to rely on public transport all the time, it doesnt matter if we just stay in a couple of places i just want to experience america from a teenagers point of view. I have family in san Francisco i was thinking this was a possibility? i have no idea of how to plan trips or how much i need to save, help would be so appreciated.
