What would be the benefits of making public transportation free?

i need to know what are some of the benefits of making public transportation. i know that we would be paying in tax dollars.

1. none, I still wouldn`t use it!
2. More people would use it, which means that there would be less cars on the road. There would be less pollution and traffic because of fewer cars on the road.There would also be less accidents. I personally get to use the buses where I live for free because i am a college student. I even sold my car!
3. It will never be free. If the government does not charge the user then the taxpayer will be assessed more taxes to support the system. You think that just because there is no user fee makes it free is a fantasy. Out here in the real world everything costs money. And if the government is involved it will cost many times more than it should.
