Location Transport

What is your favourite journey by public transport in London?

And why? A bus or tube trip with interesting things to see? A rail journey which you enjoy or means something to you? A river cruise? Helena: Bus journeys early on Saturdays are good - less people, not stopping all the time. Haz: lol - I agree about Euston - its not very nice! One of the crimes of the 20th century was the demolition the old station , check out the old station hall : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Euston_Station_-_The_Great_Hall.jpg London can get me down sometimes, but some things are good! Edwardian architecture - not much better than the three graces? Sloth: I agree - did a randon trip to Chesham on the tube once - miles out of town! I used to live a good way out on the central towards Epping - tubes running through farm land! (Green belt policy) Carina - I remember (when I was a young lad in London for the holidays) the early days of the DLR. When Canary Wharf was like a Ghost town and Island Gardens was the terminus! Remember when Tobacco Dock was full of luxury shops which no-one went to?

  1. The one home from work:)
  2. Every Saturday I catch the bus from Vauxhall to South Kensington, and it's a really nice journey. It takes you over the bridge, along the Thames, through the centre, past Harrods....I really like it!! I hate - absolutely HATE - the Tubes though. I try and avoid them when I can.
  3. I've only made a total of 4 public transport journeys in London and I can't say it was pleasant. I was overwhelmed by the speed at which people disembark and the run, why must everyone run even outside rush hour? I was pushed and herded along by the crowds of people till in the end I stepped out and stood with some Swedish beggar till the throng had passed. Pulling into Euston station on the train for the first time ever was quite impressive..the scale and speed of things was novel.Bloody ugly though. I think buses are a great way of seeing things. If you go to the top deck you get to observe the architecture of buildings close up and the attention to detail of Victorian/ Edwardian buildings in all British towns and cities. The whole civic pride malarkey.Craftsmanship that is often unseen . I should Imagine London is rich in such things..so that's what I'd choose :-) EDIT-I think London is bewitching and abysmal all in one city, as it ever was...I read that Peter Ackrpyd book and tbh it was nice to read someone fighting it's corner for a change. It's not for me though ;-) The Three Graces? Well I'm biased....I once had the odd pleasure of being on the ferry at 6.00am the buildings and the Mersey were covered in a swirly mist and it was truly heart-stopping.
  4. Number 24 bus from Pimlico to Hampstead Heath. I have to admit there are glorious views if you happen to be stuck on the rail bridge coming across the river into Charing Cross - best done at sunset.
  5. N3 night bus about 3am - Trafalgar Sq to Penge via Kennington, Brixton, Herne Hill, Dulwich etc. Always 'eventful' . Any bus journey in the City/West End/ Embankment early on a Sunday Morning. I don't care how long you've lived in London, there is nothing like disappearing down the Tube, roaring along at break-neck speed, and emerging at some far-flung part of the city you've never been to (and sometimes never heard of ) before...always a voyage of discovery. I fucking LOVE London mate!
  6. Go upstairs on the double decker and travel around the sights. I like the route that goes from the Strand, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly, Hyde park and down past Harrods. Any trips over the river are nice but forget the tube, it's overcrowded and stuffy and you can't see anything.
  7. My favourite ride is the W3, it goes through the grounds of Alexandra Palace and there is a great view of London, it looks lovely at night as well. The 141 driving over London Bridge at night & going through the city. The section of the 230 bus route between Tottenham Hale & Blackhorse Road stations because it goes through the reservoir
  8. I love the Docklands Light Railway ... sitting in the front seat and pretending to be the driver (OK, I've never grown up completely) when it goes on the elevated section ... it used to be better when the Docklands Light Railway first started before all the buildings went up, but it's still a bit special
