Transport in Italy - especially Venice?!?
I'm quite confused about the transportation in certain places. I understand Milan has got a metro system - like London's. So am I right in saying it shouldn't be a massive problem getting from one place to another? Now what's the situation like for Verona, Venice and Bologna. Venice - I'm guessing if you live around the main island it should be easy to go to places within venice by public transport (boat) But what if you live around Marghera, Porto Marghera or San Giuliano? I'm naming these places from google map. Is it relatively easy to go from these places to mainland island? and how would you do that and how much would it cost? Verona and Bologna - I think it's buses right? are they fairly well connected to different places within the city?

- As far as I remember, the transportation around Continental Europe is excellent. To travel between Venetian islands, they have a system of boats that work as a metro system. We didn't have a problem with them when we visited, but I can't remember how much they were. Just remember everything in Venice costs more, because of the costs of shipping it over water. Consider it a beauty tax for visiting one of Europe's most beautiful cities. :)
- Hi. If you want to travel between big cities, such as Venice, Verona, Bologna, you should get the train, It's fairly cheap in Italy and it takes you just in the center of the city. From Venice to Verona it'll take about one hour (it's faster with IC and ES* trains). There are direct trains from Venice to both Verona and Bologna. You can buy your tickets on the day at the ticket point in the station, and remember to stamp them (in the yellow machines) before boarding the train. From Mestre to Venice you can either get the train (it's about 12 minutes) or the bus. From Marghera, Porto Marghera and other small places around Venice you can get the urban bus, and it's not expensive at all. This is the website of the company that runs the bus service and the boat service in Venice and surrounding areas: http://www.actv.it/auto_tariffe.htm In Venice, as you said, you go around by boat, but walking is much better (and cheaper)! This is the website for all the trains in Italy: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it If you need to go around in cities other than Venice, you can get the metro (but only in a few cities like Rome and Milan ) or the bus (more commonly used). Usually you have to purchase the tickets before boarding the bus. Just ask at the local information center.
- Venice and any island close to it is well serviced by the taxi boats. Also from Venice train station you can go directly to Verona in about 1.5 hours. Verona has a good bus system as does Bologna. Bologna is fun and a great place to go - full of arches so you never get wet if it rains. Verona is lovely too with the Arena... Train travel is relatively cheap. Just got to remember to 'stamp' the ticket before you get on the train otherwise you get fined. Happy travels
