Why do people think Melbourne is better than Sydney?

I just came back from a week long trip to Melbourne and it was the most horrible thing ever! The only things that are better in Melbourne are the public transport network and the fashion industry. Sydney is a more photogenic city, has better restaurants and the people are friendlier. Also, the nightlife in Melbourne consists of 6 policemen walking together in a group up and down every main street in the city whereas here in Sydney people can actually enjoy themselves at night. Is there something I missed? Also, in Melbourne you seem to be reminded everywhere that you're in Melbourne and when someone finds out you're from Sydney they have to give you about 100 invalid reasons why Melbourne is better... whereas up here we know we're better and we don't have to prove it to anyone.

1. I prefer Sydney myself, I find Melbourne kind of drab and a bit grimy compared to Sydney. Melbourne doesn't have the same buzz and sparkle. I can see why other people prefer it though, it just isn't for me.
2. You get the the same crap when you visit Queensland they think us Sydneysiders are all snobs. Go figure.
3. The only thing they have going for them south of the border, is their state isn't on the verge of bankruptcy like ours is.
4. Yes, you never miss seeing the police in Melbourne. What about their stupid 'J' walking laws, hello this is AUSTRALIA not America. I live 1.5 hours south of Sydney so frequently visit. But I do love going to Melbourne on holidays. I don't think one city is any better then the other, just different. The thing that turns me off Melbourne is how biased some of the people are, as you noted. Would they really want the entire world to live in their city, it would be a little over-crowded, but it seems they're not intelligent enough to think of that. Future Eagles Mummy - That's what turns me off Melbourne, I'm an avid NRL girl and the storm just don't do it for me.

6. I lived in Sydney a few years back (I am a Perth Girl) and I have to ay that I absolutley loved it!! I m about to move to melbourne for my husbands work and I am really looking forward to it - except for the cold!! I think Victorians are THE most parochial Aussies! I mean we all love our states, but they all seem to suffer Jeff Kennett Syndrome!! If it don't happen in Victoria, it's not worth it. And they always try to steal all the sporting events!! As for Sydney nightlife - there are parts of Sydney that I wouldn't visit without a police escort!! Will have to get back to you in a few months about Melbourne. One thing Melbourne has going for it from my point of view is that I wil actually get to go to the (Aussie Rules) footy live! Here in Perth i am on a waiting list of about 10 000 to get membership for my team!
