Travel Los Angeles by public transport?

My friend and I are planning to visit Los Angeles this Spring break. Since both of us don't have driving license, we will rely on public transport. I know that there's metro train in Los Angeles. How reliable is it? We're interested to visit most of the tourist attractions, Hollywood, Chinese theater, farmer's market etc. We might also visit Disneyland and/or Universal Studio. Does the metro go to t hose places? Also, is it possible to rent a bicycle and cycle around downtown? Where can we find information about that? Thank you very much!

  1. i went to l.a. and relied on public transportation for 4 days and didn't have a problem. i used the $5 metro day pass good for the train and bus. i was all over from echo park to santa monica i was able to easily get around. but if you plan on going to santa monica it's better to catch the big blue bus but you can't use the day pass for that, it's cheap but i forgot how much it is. the trains can get you to most of the basic tourist spots. very easy to get around. http://metro.net/default.asp they also have a phone # so you can call and get directions also from place to place also.
  2. You can find out a lot at Metro.net and maps.google.com. Some of those areas are accessible by metro train, others are not. The train itself is reliable, but it can't take you were there aren't tracks. Hollywood/Walk of Fame/Chinese Theater: This area is served by the Metro Red Line, Hollywood & Highland stop. Farmer's Market: Located on 3rd St and Fairfax, this is not serviced by trains. Disneyland: This is not serviced by Metro trains, but you can get there via metro bus or a combination of Metrolink Train/Amtrak Train and local shuttle bus. See www.metrolinktrains.com or Amtrak.com. You would need to get to Union Station, then take the Metrolink Train to Anaheim, where you could catch a local bus. However, the metrolink train is for commuters, and the last train back to LA leaves early. Universal Studios: Served by the Metro Red Line, 1 stop north of Hollywood & Highland. Downtown is NOT bicycle-friendly. Perhaps it is where you live, but it is DEFINITELY not here. It is very dangerous for bicycles
  3. Get dropped off at union station and take the Hollywood redline. Get off at Hollywood and Highland for all the Hollywood attractions. Get back on and take it all the way to Universal Studios. Seeing Hollywood by train is very easy. Its the buses that suck.
