- You don't want the van, you want the flat bed. And you can carry 1000kg. The suspension is rated for that.
- All modern panel vans are pretty much alike when it comes to fuel economy as a number of them share the same power-train/body i.e Renault- Vauxhall & Nissan are the same, also Volkswagen & some Mercedes. So you pays your money & take the best for you. if you carry loads that are usually too large for a standard van, then you would be better off with a chassis - cab & 'box van' mounted to the chassis. This is more expensive , and the fuel economy is not as good - more drag with the air flow hitting a flat wall. As for using flat bed, do not forget you will have to secure the load with ropes & sheets - a lot more work - try controlling a flapping tarp sheet in windy conditions - oh for the old days - not!
- Firstly, don't look any further than the Transporter. The best van in it's class by far. Keep well away from the Renault, Nissan ect. As for mpg., the current Transporter comes with a choice of four diesel engines, two 1.9's and two 2.5's. I suppose the 1.9's would be more economical.
