How do I safely transport eight foot-long goldfish 1300 miles to my new home?
I have some rather large goldfish, that I'm pretty attached to but don't know how to safely transport them. I won't be moving for a little while but I want to get as much information as possible before I have to move. Driving it would be about 19 hours with no stops. I meant eight gold fish that are each about a foot long, not one goldfish that is eight feet. That would be a little crazy.

- 8ft long? Are you sure? If so, you better call Guinness Book of World Records! Their largest is a mere 18" or so. Did you mean 8"? You need either large tubs or large fish bags, a load of buckets and a few battery powered air bubblers. Have a read through this: http://www.pond-doctor.co.uk/longtransportingkoi.html
- I would use a battery operated bubble stone in the tank you transport them in. I bought one in the sporting good section of wal mart
- catx i think he means 8 1foot long goldfish wow i was right and still got thumbs down
- i think that you cant make it that long with fish they will probably die from stress. and with all that water and fish i would have them shipped like by ups or the airlines. yes it will be expensive but hopefully your fish will live then
- http://www.aquariumfish.net/information/moving_your_fish.htm here is an article that outlines how to transport your fish. It involves using coolers and garbage bags, and stated the max amt of time the fish can survive in these conditions are 48 hours. Please read this thoroughly, and with such large fish, you will need to use a couple of coolers and will need to transport a large amount of the water. I hope you are using a moving van with a lot of room. I hope this is useful, and good luck to you & your precious cargo in your new home!
- Eight, one foot long fish as opposed to Moby Dick :o) In the UK I would suggest a game fish carrier; that's a fish transporter that supplies ponds and lakes. They are geared up to long haul bigger fish longer distances. It would mean the lorry going out of its way to pick up and drop off. Here that would only be only a couple of hundred miles at absolute most, but in America I suppose it would be in the lap of the Gods? Find the nearest game pond or lake to your new location and back track to their nearest supplier to your current location. Can't see it being cheap though. By road it will be a two day trip and something around 800 litres of water with portable oxygen. Train would be another possible solution, but it is a specialist job. Most sane people would sell the fish :o)
- Sounds real dumb. How about a few coolers I have fish that I transport and what I do is I take the cooler and but Boiling water in it, let it sit for a bit (30min) then empty it out an dtake a cool back that was in a pan of how boiling water and put that in the cooler then I bag up my fish and put them in. but the sound like cold water fish so I'd just put them in a cooler or a LARGE tub/bucket and take them in that
