How safe is travel by bus/train in Canada for single women?

Hey! I'm thinking of going to Montreal for a language course this summer. I'd be going there alone and I'd like to see some of the surrounding cities while I'm there. I'm a female student and I was just wondering how safe it would be for me to travel alone on public transport for long journeys. Is it likely that I'll be mugged because I'm on my own..? Thanks.

Very safe. Is there a 100% guarantee? Nope, but that's life. Crime on the train is almost unheard of and a couple of well-publicized incidents on the bus recently are notable because of their freakishness.
I do it all the time. Just be aware and vigilant, but really I feel very comfortable doing so.
Of course not. I go on the bus everyday, and it's completely safe. A lot of people are actually friendly; some people will switch into one of the farther seats so people with strollers can sit in the front-open seat, or if there's an elderly person then they move to allow them to sit, and stuff like that. Just try to be respectful, and most of all, you should be quiet. I'm not saying that you can't talk, but most people who have to sit on the bus for half an hour or more wouldn't want to listen to peoples yapping really loudly the whole way.... :p Good luck.
It's not a problem - I take the train long distance on my own once in a while without any concerns. Where do you live!!??
Single women are very safe in Canada. The few brutal crimes in the history of all of Canada involved almost always males assaulting other males.
Extremely safe. Just be reasonable and don't wander around the city after dark by yourself - or at least, not in questionable neighborhoods. As far as travel for single women, no problems there.
It's safe. Like someone before said, not 100% but pretty close. I'm a young female too and have no problem with taking transit alone here in Canada. If you really don't feel safe, take a cab but it will cost you.
Nope. Montreal is pretty safe its nothing compared to Washington D.C. L.A. or New York
