how safe is it three blocks south of Civic Center in San Francisco for a family with a toddler?
Unfortunately, other neighborhoods are not an option. I have a chance to take an apartment only in this area, or else BART commute from the East Bay for 1 hour each way and over $100 a month in public transport costs. So I'm trying to figure out if NOT living in the Civic Center area is worth the money and time.... please give a little description rather than just "it's ok" or "don't live there..."

- I think it should be fine. I mean, anything can happen anywhere. It's not a particularly bad area or anything.
- It is kind of a weird blend of an older warehouse/industrial area with some rental flats and residential hotels mixed in. Some homeless meandering about. But I think the area is generally safe. Just a little strange.
- If you're referring to the 9th & Folsom area, it's got a lot of commuter traffic, a combo of business and apartments. The "iffy" area is closer to 6th Street. I'm not sure of your financial situation, but if you have the option of a nicer place in the East Bay, in my opinion it would be worth it, especially with a toddler.
