Location Transport

What is the legal way to transport my gun if i want to go to a shooting range here in California?

I'm going to try out my new gun soon, i want to take it to a shooing range a few cities away.... I'm going in my friends car, he has his license and his car is all good... So how do i transport the gun? Do i HAVE to have it locked with the lock it comes with?

1. It needs to be unloaded and in a locked container. The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.
