Best public transportation to and from San Francisco International Airport?
What's the best public transportation to use when you are from the airport and you're going to a place in San Francisco? Also for when going back to SFO? Thanks. Also, we might be carrying slightly heavy luggage..

- BART
- Taxis are widely available, but can be pretty pricey because the airport is located out of town. The good news is that they are priced by the mile and extra passengers ride for no extra charge. And, reservations are encouraged, so, call around for the different cab companies in town and reserve a van. The meters are regulated by the City and all charge the same rate. The bus systems CAN get you to and from the airport, but, lugging heavy baggage can be awkward, and, during commute hours, darn near impossible. If you can get to a BART station, and NOT travel during commute hours, this is probably your most economical and practical choice. The loading platforms are on the same level as the train floors, so you won't have to do any lifting to get your luggage in and out. If you can manage a wheeled luggage cart or two, then there will be few issues to deal with. Essentially you take the Westbound train, toward Daley City and get off at the transfer station going to the Airport.
- BART can be a hassle with heavy luggage, especially if you are traveling at a busy time. You'd also have to lug your stuff from the BART station to wherever your hotel is. The easiest way is to get a shuttle for about $18 each. You catch them at the departures level. They'll take you directly to your location. If there are a couple of you, and you are in a hurry, a taxi might be cost effective. Depending on your final destination, the fare would be around $40-50 total.
- BART is the best choice. If there's no BART station near where you're going, you can transfer to Muni or take a cab.
