Location Transport

What is the simplest way to reach the Appalachian Trail from Atlantic City, NJ for a backpacker?

Wondering what the best way is. I don't care where exactly on the trail I intersect, anywhere from Delaware Water Gap, PA to upstate New York is fine. I know there's a bus terminal in Stroudsburg, PA/Delaware Water Gap, PA but the greyhound site is not very clear on its exact location and I'd like to know where I'm going to end up. I don't want to walk more than a mile or two before reaching a trail, not necessarily the AT but a forest of some kind. no long road walks for me. I also know there's a train stop on the metro north line from Grand Central Station, NY that stops along the trail near Pawling, NY but how would I get from Penn Station, where I would enter NYC, to Grand Central with a huge backpack? basically, I'm looking for intersections between public transport and the trail anywhere between DWG, PA and New York. NJ Transit is fine. wordy, I know, but thanks in advance.

  1. The easiest way would be to take a bus from Atlantic City, NJ to New York City, then take another bus from New York City to Delaware Water Gap, PA. The trail goes right through DWG. You are within a mile of it. Then you can hike north into NJ or south through PA. I have taken the bus from NYC to DWG to hike the AT. Takes about an hour. I think it was a Quicks bus and I got it at the NY Port Authority Bus Station. As for your pack you can take it with you. Or, as I did, ship it to a motel or B&B in DWG and stay there the night before you hike.
