First time in New York City - Tips (and transport)?

My wife and I are going for 5 nights at the end of May, for the first time. Any tips? We're looking at all the options such as: 1) Public transport: what's the cheapest ticket? i.e. 7 days unlimited ride Metro Card for subway and local buses - $25 - but is this ok? Which buses can we and can't we use? 2) New York pass? Thanks for your help, Francesco and Susan

  1. My suggestion is: get an unlimited MetroCard, and ride the trains! I think its way more easier than buses, since there are too many and many routes. Trains will take you anywhere in the city.
  2. The unlimited ride Metrocard is a good buy, you can ride all local and limited-stops buses, and you can ride the subway. That will get you just about anywhere. You cannot ride the express buses, which cost $5, but as a visitor, you probably wouldn't use them anyway. Express buses go mainly to residential areas that aren't as convenient to other forms of public transportation, so they're used mostly by resident commuters. If, for whatever reason, you find that you need to ride the express buses a few times, then the 7-day card including express buses costs $41.

  4. Francesco, the subway is the best way to get around the city. The 7-day unlimited ride MetroCard is the best bargain in town. At $25 a person, you can get unlimited ride on the subway, bus and Staten Island Railway regardless of distance. In regard to public transit, the subway and bus system in this City is very safe. You'll be fine. Don't be surprise to find that the passenger sitting next to you on the subway is an undercover cop. In regard to the New York Pass, its good, but the Citypass is better. You will get discounted admissions to many of the main New York City attractions, as well as discount on Broadway ticket with the Citypass. I've included a link to the CItypass program below. http://www.citypass.com/city/ny.html (deep discounts on major attractions) You can also get the Citypass at the NYC & Company's Visitor's Center, located at 53rd Street and 7th Avenue. I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck
  5. subways are the best transportation to get around... if you like sightseeing tours, many here from walking, bus and even bike tours http://www.citysightsny.com/
