Which is better, Melbourne or Sydney?
I'm currently living in northern nsw and am planning on moving to either Melbourne or Sydney. I can't decide which. I'm not a big fan of the beach and I actually prefer cold weather but I absolutely detest AFL which everyone in Melbourne seems to go nutters for... But how else do they compare... housing availability and costs, general atmosphere, public transport etc. And I'm finishing my teaching degree at uni. So jobs aren't really a problem.

- if i were you i'd prefer Sydney
- I have went to both the places and I prefer Sydney.
- I live in Melbourne and I love it. When I have been to Sydney.. everything is just too big and too industrial. If you plan to live in the suburbs, choose Melbourne for nice neighbours and low cost housing. The wineries out in the country are great and the schools are some of the best in Australia. Melbournians aren't all THAT nuts for footy. You can choose to be oblivious.. just steer clear of the sports section in the newspaper... I hate footy to an extent too, and I'm doing okay. You might even come to like it. I don't know all that much about Sydney so I can't help you out. Good luck with whatever you choose!

- SYDNEY!
- I'm from Sydney. I like its fast-paced lifestyle, its history, its harbour, its beaches, but I also like: The arty new trendy former industrial suburbs like Waterloo with its funky little art galleries, avant garde architecture and cafes in the rooves of old warehouses. Bohemian suburbs like Newtown with more Thai restaurants than you could poke a stick at and university students everywhere. Gentrified suburbs like Paddington with its stunning Victorian architect, alternative community and cafes and shops, and the CBD itself just nearby for even more shopping and entertainment. Leafy, green suburbs of the North Shore where you can feel relaxed and away from all the hustle and bustle if you need to. Sydney does have a high cost of living, possibly the highest in Australia. Its public transport network is abysmal, but we do get cold weather in autumn, winter and early spring...it isn't always hot beach weather. I've visited Melbourne. It's a nice city with a colder climate and a much better public transport network than Sydney, but I've never lived there so I can't comment. It does lack some of the glamour that Sydney has, but from what I hear, it has a much more theatre-driven culture if you're into that sort of thing. And I wouldn't worry about AFL. It's not like Melbourne would suddenly become a different city come AFL time. But yeah, my choice would be Sydney.
- Melbourne
- Melbourne is really a big country town. Now I'm sure the Melbournites will disagree, but it's just the reality of the situation. If you dislike AFL, then it's not your place to be as they live and breath it. They do have a better transport system than we do and a decent cafe style ambinace. Whilst Sydney possess a pub culture, with great beaches and real buzz about the place
- I think syndey is much better than melbourne. in syndey you can live comfortably in a nice affordable home somewhere in the suburbs, where as in melbourne, houses are expensive everywhere. Sydney is where everything/everyone is although it doesnt feel crowded. I also HATE AFL and i rarley hear or see anything about AFL in sydney. Melbourne is for shopping/AFL Syndey is for living
- Sydney. Always has been, always will be. Melbourne doesn't even come second IMO I think Brisbane is second... a far second=)
- Sydney doesnt blow---Melbourne sucks lmao
