Best places to stay in New Zealand?

What are some of the best places to stay (preferably inexpensive) and visit in New Zealand? We would like to do some adrenalin pumping stuff, however scenery and intriguing places are higher on our list. we would like to visit both the north and south islands, as well as some smaller ones, got any tips? What is the best route/way to travel around NZ, we are planning to do it via public transport and maybe a few tours, but we prefer self guided.

1. Try Westport for some cheap whitewater adventure. Go off the tourist track a little to places like Dunedin, Taranaki (good surfing), East Coast (locals speaking Maori), use the website http://nakedbus.com for the best deals on transport, try hitchhiking in the South Island or on the main highway in both islands (Highway 1) but not near Blenheim and take the train to the end of the line at Paraparaumu, north of Wellington. Stay in Wanaka instead of Queenstown for a better deal on the same stuff. Stewart Island is a great place to go. You can visit Waiheke Island in a day by taking a ferry from Auckland.
