How do I get from Krabi, Thailand, to Langkawi in Malaysia via bus/train/boat?

I'm travelling around south east Asia in November and need to get from Bangkok to Singapore via road. I have decided to stop in Krabi for part of my trip but then want to get to Langkawi in northern Malaysia. I've looked online for suggestions and it seems the most feasible option is to take a bus to Satun and then cross the border there, however does anyone know the approximate time of travel and cost? There's no way I can afford to fly or rent my own vehicle so it's all going to be done by public transport, but I'm also unsure of how safe the southern Thailand area is at the moment? If anyone could help, that'd be great!

  1. You can take a train from HuaLamPong Bkk to Hadyai, from there take a van to Krabi take a van from Satun to Padang Besar, from Padang Besar to Arau, those van just wait until passengers are full then only they depart, so it don't really have a schedule, i don't really know the cost but it is definately lesser than 100 bath, from Arau you can take a bus to Kuala Perlis, from there take a ferry to Langkawi the journey is one hour from Langkawi take a ferry to Penang, it is 3 hours, you can stay o night or two in Penang, or else the ferry from langkawi arrive in Sweetenham Port, Penang ferry terminal is just 15 minutes walk away, from Penang to Butterworth it is free, only 20 minutes, from Butterworth there is an express bus to Kuala Lumpur every 1 hour, if you want to go to Spore direct it is approx 9 - 10 hours, normally the bus depart at night, it is better to stop in Kuala Lumpur for a day or two before going to Spore, the bus station in KL is Puduraya
  2. The best option is by train which is safe and sound to travel by tourist from Thailand to Malaysia.
