UPS Taxes/Tariffs/Duty/Broker charges?

Hey Everyone, Hopefully someone can clue me in on how the pricing structure for UPS' international shipping rates work. I purchased motorcycle apparel from Italy for $989 US and the item was shipped through UPS expedited from Italy to the United States. How much should I expect to pay to cover UPS Taxes/Tariffs/Duty/Admin charges? They are asking for $279 which sounds ridiculous. Please help. Thanks in advance.

1. I don't know the weight and volume of the item, but consider something like a motherboard from the US to Italy may cost 50 to 90 $, just shipping, it does seems an appropriate fare, if the parcel is larger and the delivery fast. If custom duties charges are included, I could even say it's quite cheap...
