Can you weld large shipping containers together?

I am looking at buying some large shipping containers and I would like to know if you can weld out the walls and then weld several of them together? Would taking out the walls make the container structurally unsound or would there need to be support beams put in?

1. You most definitely can weld them together. In fact, in some parts of the world they are so over-stocked with these bad boys that people are reusing them for housing in a modern way. I thought that was really smart.
