Harry Potter vs Twilight?

I have to do a comparative essay between both the books, mainly about the themes. So far i have death, immortality, transport, bloodsucking, food Twilight Death - Vampires - are they dead?, Bella + death Edward + death His parents dead. Food Bella's dad/Cullen's food/blood vegetarian lifestyle Transportation Groovy cars/Bella's truck, the motorbikes Harry Potter Twilight Harry Potter Death - Voldemort's fear of death + wish to live forever Food - Social events with food/deathday party Ron and food vs Harry and Dersley's food Transportation - Quiddich + broomsticks, flu powder, apparition, Knight bus, Train, Thestrals, flying car So far thats what i have, so i was wondering if there were any other themes which i could compare and contrast. Thanks in advance =]

  1. I would not do food or bloodsucking, first of all. Death would be pretty good
  2. *Love *good and evil (or good defeating evil) *mind-reading (does that count as a theme? it plays an important part in both, with occlumency and edward's vampire powers) *family (harry doesn't have a great family, joins the hogwarts/weasley family. Bella has a broken family and joins the cullens)
  3. They both have the element of supernatural.. Twilight- vampires, werewolves Harry Potter- magic Hope this helped a little. :]
  4. I think by themes, it means the messages, or morals of the book. So for Harry Potter, the main theme would be how love is the strongest power. Death also serves as a strong theme. Because it's Twilight, you can also use love as a major part. Also, maybe you can see how the other world views them. In Harry Potter, wizards have to hide away from Muggles, and in Twilight, vampires hide away from people. Most wizards don't care about Muggles, most vampires don't care about humans. There are sects in Wizardy such as Parseltoungue and Dark Wizards, and so in Twilight, where there are the people who don't suck human blood.
  5. I don't think that any of these themes, except for the Death in Harry Potter really work. A theme is something that the author is trying to tell you about, not things that appear frequently in the book. Death is a good theme in Harry Potter - a lot of what the book deals with is about death, but food and transportation are not themes. Also, death is not a good theme in Twilight. Just because lots of people are dead does not make the theme Death. One good theme in Twilight might be choices. Bella has to choose between a lot of things - Edward or Jacob, to be a vampire, or not to, etc. Forbidden love, sacrifice and fear may also be themes in Twilight. As for Harry Potter (in my opinion, so much better than Twilight) some themes are death, (as you already mentioned, but for different reasons) normality and love. Please don't choose to ignore this, the things that you listed really aren't themes.
  6. Love Love between best friends (Ron + Hermione and Bella + James) Magic/fantasy/supernatural Seeing the future (Alice's talent from Twilight and the prophecy and divination from Harry Potter) Mind reading (Edward's talent and Occlumency) Adventure Good triumphing over evil Big battles School Presence of supernatural in an otherwise normal world (as opposed to things like Lord of the Rings where the whole world has been invented) Hopefully that will give you some ideas. Of the themes you listed I think that you should definitely look at immortality (possibly linked to death as well).
  7. Unhealthy obsession-Voldemort's wish to live forever and Bella and Edward's whole relationship. Money-Harry, the Malfoys and presumably the Dursleys all have a good bit of it. The Cullens are absurdly wealthy. Werewolves-Remus Lupin and Fenrir Greyback and the Native American (incidentally, Meyer completely ignored the fact the Quilleute have real customs and legends that do not center on the Cold Ones)
  8. Harry Potter > Twilight A wand (|) is mightier than a bite (v v)!!! End of story, good bye, the end. Any questions? -Mad-Eye Moody, HPGF movie
  9. Do not compare these books. They are too different and Harry Potter is way better. Did you choose this topic?
  10. i personally wouldn't do bloodsucking or food...save that for two vampires novels. now, I would add on the theme about feminity: Twilight - makes females seem like they ALWAYS depend on men, that females are weak and undeserving and will let things slide without any complaint Harry Potter - makes females seem strong, that they do not have to depend on any person other than themselves.
  11. you could cover the actual themes...... Twilight: star crossed love Harry Potter: evasion and understanding of death
