How do you transport fish in a car?

I am a college student and will be going home for Thanksgiving and eventually winter break very soon. I have two goldfish, (they are fantail goldfish) who live in a glass bowl in my apartment. I live instate and will be driving back to my parents house which is about 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Does anyone have an suggestions on how I can safely transport my fish from my apartment to my parents house. I can't leave them in my room alone for school breaks because they will die. Thank you!

  1. use a clear plastic bag
  2. How long are you planning on leaving for holidays? You can generally leave fish alone for a couple of weeks without feeding them. You can get those feeder blocks (which most fish people will not recommend) or you can put some elodea or other water weed into the tank for the fish to eat in your absence. It is not easy to transport fish in cars, and it does seem unnecessary if you are not going for a long period of time. If you need to remove your pets in your absence, I would go to the pet store to get some of those fish travel bags that you buy the fish in- most pet stores will be happy to help you. Half fill the bag with water, and then try to fill some with air before sealing the bag with a rubber band. If your fish are in a bowl, tip out the water and put all of their supplies (food, test kits, water conditioner, etc) in the bowl along with the fish in the bag for easy transport. If it is going to be hot in the car and you dont have any air conditioning you may want to put them in an icebox (obviously without any ice) to ensure that they stay cool.
  3. get a big plastic bag and put it in the tank with the water they are in, then catch them with a net and put them in the bag. seal the bag. you want to use the water from their tank so the teamperature difference doesnt cause them to go into shock.
  4. You can get fish food that you put into the tank as a small block and it gradually breaks off pieces each day for them to eat. If that's your only worry, about feeding I mean. You can get them in most pet stores. They're called like 'holiday food' or something. I've used them and they work. Hope that helps.
  5. Put them in a plastic box with a lid with holes in. Or bag them up like they do in the fish shop By the way your fish should be in 30 gallons of water with a filter and pump not a fish bowl. They are leading a cramped life and they will not grow to their potential as they will have stunted growth. Another thing to note is , if you keep moving them here and there they are going to get very stressed and will die. Leave them in your parent's house and when you go home on holidays you can see them
  6. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact you can buy an automatic feeder. http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/toppicks/tp/TPautofeeders.htm but if you really really must take them home get a plastic bag and do what the others say to do. Keep in mind that traveling is pretty hard on a fish. They sit in the bag in their own waste making the ammonia levels skyrocket and the oxygen levels are almost nonexistent.
  7. just give him another fish to kill for food
