Is it legal to transport a firearm and ammo in a vehicle on a cross country road trip?
Driving from Cali to the east coast and I'm not sure if I should ship my guns over or just transport them in their cases. Locked up of course. Ammo?

- Long guns are most likely OK to transport, locked in a case especially. Hand guns are subject to lots of different rules state to state. You might benefit from a search on the state government web site of the states you will be in, to see if there is any easily accessible information about gun transport. It also may be that sites for organizations like the NRA, or other gun groups, already have compiled a list of rules and regulations for gun and ammunition transport.
- Not too sure about most states. MNass. has some bad laws about transporting weapons (pistols, rifles, shotguns) without written permiaaion from the state. I'd get a permit from CA stating that the weapons are to be transported, what states, and dates of travel Make sure that you keep them locked in a secure area (trunk) or storage box. I'd remove the bolt from any rifles, and in other ways make them inoperable by placing certain parts of the weapons in different bags.
